I have a MSI b360m mortar picked out to go with my i5-8400, and MSI says that the motherboard has support for nvme and I was looking at a nvme drive but they are pretty expensive. I was looking at a smaller space m.2 ssd and I can't seem to find any sites with the answer to my question; Will the b360m mortar (or just other mobo's with m.2 nvme ports) be backwards compatible with SATA m.2 ssds? If not ill just spring for a nvme m.2 and pay more for better speed.

Modern motherboards are usually good with the M key and the M+B key drives. It's old motherboards that only work with M or B. Although, I don't think I've seen a motherboard that supports B key, so if that's what you mean, you could probably get a SATA 2.5 inch adapter

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

most if not all will support the slower SATA interface. so you should be fine on using the SATA m.2 drives.

from the MSI website: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B360M-MORTAR/Specification
