I'm getting ready to go to College, and want to pick up a machine that is capable of gaming but also doesn't scream it, either. I also want it to have a respectful battery life, 6+ hours doing non-intensive, non-gaming task. I gravitated towards the Gigabyte Aero 15x, with noted 7 hours battery life and a GTX 1070 all in one package. I appreciate the design and the specs are nothing to scoff at, either. But then I considered the Razer Blade Stealth, a cheaper device that's more portable and probably has a stronger battery life, considering it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card. Taking into consideration that I don't really plan on gaming outside of my dorm, I question if it would be worth my time (and dollar) going for an external solution with a full-fat card inside, so I get the benefit of portability and power with a single connection. I also would like to use this for small-scale VR with my oculus rift, if that makes any difference. Even forgoing Razers external solution and use something like the Aorus Gaming Box, which features a small GTX 1080 already included in its 649$ price tag. What do you all think?
Cheers!

Warded, i wanna know about this too, because im considering selling my PC to buy one of those fancy new 6 core laptops and just use my 1080 as an eGPU.

EDIT: back in 2016 i had one of those Alienware graphics amplifiers and it worked great, when i took my 970 out of my desktop it worked +/- 2 fps in most benchmarks with my i7 3960x

Expect 1060 performance only via TB3 eGPU (even with 1070 or higher). Not to mention possible shuttering issue. If you don't need GPU on the go, eGPU might be a good solution but requires quite a lot of money

Are you suggesting Thunderbolt 3 bottlenecks anything higher than a 1060? Should I just settle with a 1060 in an enclosure? That just makes going with the Aero 15x sound that much more... efficient.

Personally, im pretty happy with the 1060 in my g7. Although it sure would be nice to get gtx 1080ti power out of an egpu ive been on the fence about this...as ive heard it just bottlenecks... not sure if there is a remedy for that.  Im pretty sure i was hitting 70ish fps with ultra settings in the BFV beta that was out a little while ago so thats not bad, hopefully better results when the full game releases.

Dell G7 - Win10 (GTX 1060 Max-Q 1,874mhz / I7 8750H 4.1ghz / 16GB 2666mhz DDR4 / 128gb SSD / 1TB HDD) overclocked and undervolted.

Cinebench Scores                            Unigine Valley Ultra Benchmark

OpenGL:    110.78 fps                       FPS: 73.6

Cpu:           1236cb                            Score: 3080

singlecore: 173cb                              Min FPS: 33.5

MP Ratio:   7.14x                               Max FPS: 151.3

I have a 1060 in my desktop, and I'm honestly looking for a little more oomf. I find that it tends to fall behind in some virtual reality applications that I really enjoy playing. I've seen conflicting statements on eGPUs and how they scale with each card. It seems so spotty, but the convenience propagation also seems second to none. I don't plan to game in the library or at the dining hall-- if I'm gonna game anywhere but my dorm It'll be possible to take my eGPU with me, so it's not an inconvenience to go with either. I just wanna know what would be in my best interest, for my performance and my wallet.

If you want better portability+battery life and don't want to mess around with thermals, Ultrabook is still a better option

The eGPU will cost a lot, not the best implementation ever, lot of performance will be wasted. Better you get the Aero 15X. Or buy a decent ultrabook with great battery life(LG Gram or Dell XPS maybe Zenbook) and spend the rest of the money to build yourself a PC

^^this. Would be a better choice than getting eGPU IMO
