Memtest question

Hi guys

 

When you guys overclock RAM do you run the full test every time to check for errors before changing the next thing,

 

or is there a shorter test you can run to check for errors first and adjust, check for errors agian, no errors, run full test for stability?

I just let it run for 5 mins because I'm impatient. I only play games though, so I can take the toll of a crash.

I usually do some Prime95 blend or some other memory intensive application, then once I "Settle in" on an OC I will run a full memtest overnight with lots of passes

When I tried to OC ram I found Prime95 large FFT to find things quickly, sometimes, that memtest didn't show. This suggests to me, it may not be the ram itself, but the load put on the IMC. If you do the P95 route, run it a few times for like a minute. If it happens, it happens fast, but doesn't always happen on 1st run. I guess it might depend on where in the ram the data is put, and it can move around a bit.

Ok so after every value change, i boot into windows, and benhmark there?

The difficulty is that you care about any instability. I think when I was OC ram, I did most of the testing in Windows as it was faster. Booting into Windows was a start and showed some level of stability already. I used aida64 ram test for a short time, and P95 large FFt for a short time. After so many changes, I might do a quick memtest to verify that too, to gain some confidence in overall stability and give a reference point to work more.

 

Actually, how aggressive do you plan on tweaking? If you're only changing primary timings and speeds, that's not too many permutations anyway. If you're also doing secondary/tertiary timings, that can take a long time to dial in.

This is my very first attempt on overclocking,  so i'm thinking to take it easy, not like i can go out and just get a replacement if i do manage to pop something.

Rather not say, lots of people refuse to help me because its old. And acording to them there will be no use in overclocking, that is for them, ive run this system for the past 8 to 9 years, as i do not have the money to spend on a new pc, so for me it is a big deal, and to me there is use in overclocking,

Most people just use Prime95 for testing if within Windows.
