building a pc.

use case: web surfing, 1080p streaming, coding in c++ and python, light gaming at 1080p medium settings( mostly car games and fps, not AAA though)

help me decide between ryzen 7 1800x and the new shiny core i5 8600.

I will pair both with one 8gb stick.

Ryzen, though if you want to save some money, a 1700 will do just fine

a ryzen for sure, since you are quite productive and not having a high end GPU, the cores & threads wont disappoint you.

BTW see if you can get R7 1700 and OC for similar performance.

and  one 8gb stick ram is not recommended , just get a pair of anything

thanks. I'm planning on getting a mobo with just 2 ram sticks. I'll have one 8gb stick at 2666 or above and upgrade it later. will it bottleneck. I'm aware ryzen benefits from high speed memory.

I don't think you shoud get the i5. I strearm on an i5-8600k +16gb ram + 1080 gpu and I'm not getting smooth 720p 60fps using the cpu. I suggest going Ryzen, factoring the overclock it probably is way better than the i5 for streaming.

why should i go with the i5?  with the ryzen I can overclock it slightly and have the extra threads.

because you only have a single stick of memory, and I assume it's a slow ~2400MHz one

if you can save some money by using a cheaper Ryzen 7 instead and buy another stick of RAM, then Ryzen is better.

also applications like chrome, office and vs code benefit from faster cores than multiple right?

games now support multiple cores.

with more cores nowadays, programs are not well utilized and not quite efficient....

but the task you mention are all light tasks, they use only very little cpu power compared to ryzen.

ryzen is definitely overkill for these purpose

Get the i5 8600 or Ryzen 7.  ashwin I don't know why your not getting a sustained 60fps hmmmm.  I get a sustained 60fps in Quake Champions and Unreal Tournament with my pos video card.  Also the CPU usage is 15 percent avg on both games.  Theres like 85 percent sitting there doing nothing.

For me youtube full screen or netflix takes up couple percent CPU power.  Maybe 8 percent or so.

So, I was under the impression by streaming you meant streaming to twitch/youtube. Not, watching netflix, my bad. The i5 is definitley good for gaming.

yeah me too. minor improvement but with the release of the 9th gen cpus, the price of the 8th gen cpus will decrease right?

just wait and see, imo just another disappointment of the year,

but really going for i5 6 cores for streaming? good luck then

it's all good.

But yeah, i5 is good for gaming and 8gigs ram is technically enough, but go for 16 if you can. Chrome uses a lot of ram, it's kinda ridiculous.
