I'm looking at pricing for updating my PC to the newer hardware and I've got some questions about Ryzen. For reference I guess I currently have an AMD FX-8350.

So, I do not follow CPUs pretty much at all. The entire Intel lineup confuses me and I'm not sure what's happening with Ryzen. AMD released Ryzen 2 recently

  • How do I know whats the 2nd gen? Is it the 1700 is first gen and 2700 being second gen?
  • I read that the L2 cache has been improved but honestly I don't really know what that means or effects.
  • What's the difference between the standard model and the X? I think when I first saw benchmarks years ago it was just kind of an OC'd model or something?
  • The 2700 is quite a bit more than the 1700, is it worth the price difference?

For my usage scenarios, I do play games but I also use Blender, and occasionally some Photoshop or Premiere. I use CPU rendering on Blender pretty frequently since my 960 only has 2gb of vram...

  • Spot on. 1XXX is first gen, 2XXX is second gen.
  • That just means there's more CPU cache. If you don't know what it is, you probably don't need to worry about it.
  • The X models just come with higher clock speeds and have XFR enabled, which is a technology similar to Intel's turbo boost. Generally the non-X models are a much better value for money.
  • The 1700 is still a better value, and you won't notice a massive difference between the two, especially if you overclock the 1700.

The R7 1700 is one of the best value CPUs right now

but what's your budget and country?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Well my budget is realistically zero, but ~$250 tops and U.S.A. Still wondering if it's even worth upgrading with the overpriced parts still.

The only thing that's still overpriced in RAM

but you aren't going to get much of a new PC for $250...need about $400 for an R7 1700 upgrade with 16GB of RAM and an ASrock Pro 4 or MSI Tomahawk board

I meant $250 for CPU. I just need a CPU, mobo and ram.

I was looking at an Asus B450 or something. Honestly I don't follow Mobos much either. xD It's a decent price though.

I thought the 1st gen Ryzens really didn't OC much. Is it realistic to OC with a 212 Evo?

So what's the budget for everything?

Hyper 212 doesn't mount to AM4 without an adapter, better off with a Hyper T4 or something else.

I have a FX 8350 and Ryzen 7 1700 build in my sig - the Ryzen 7 1700 BLOWS my FX 8350 out of the water.  However my FX 8350 is still very viable and TBH I will not be replacing that CPU for another year at least (I game 1080p, wife games at 2k).  If I were to replace the 8350 today - it would be the Ryzen 2600x as its price and performance are sweet for me.

I'm just asking for CPU right now. I'd just get the cheapest reliable 3200 RAM I can find from a decent company.

Would it need a custom adapter or could I just contact Cooler Master and get one?

That might be a better option. I kind of want 8 cores, but I'm also assuming that even the 2600 is significantly faster than the 8350.

IF you're planning to buy your PC in pieces don't, just give the whole budget for everything, that determines what you should buy.

Why tho? I'd buy the mobo and RAM at the same time but I don't need decision making help to pick those.

Everything else I already have.

Because you might have an issue with a part and only discover it when you build the PC and then you're beyond a potential return period.

Or new parts might come out or be announced.

Well then in any scenario I'm still working off the CPU first. MOBO and RAM can change to fit. Power supply, case, hard drives and cooling remain pretty consistent.
