4690k takes a different socket.

OP, go with the Xeon.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

E5-1620 is a better CPU, motherboards you find will be workstation or server grade though

I could see it possibly happening if the CPU is a low clocked one, or the board only supports lower clocked RAM. Not really and issue with anything that new, more the LGA1366 stuff.

Xeon E5-1620 v1 = Core i7 3820 which is a glorified 2600k (+2MB L3, +128bit more memory bus + 24 more PCIe lanes).
In short : Xeon wins.

CPU : Core i7 6950X @ 4.26 GHz + Hydronaut + TRVX + 2x Delta 38mm PWM
MB : Gigabyte X99 SOC (BIOS F23c)
RAM : 4x Patriot Viper Steel 4000MHz CL16 @ 3042MHz CL12.12.12.24 CR2T @1.48V.
GPU : Titan Xp Collector's Edition (Empire)
M.2/HDD : Samsung SM961 256GB (NVMe/OS) + + 3x HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 6TB
DAC : Motu M4 + Audio Technica ATH-A900Z
PSU: Seasonic X-760 || CASE : Fractal Meshify 2 XL || OS : Win 10 Pro x64

8g 1333mhz ram will be enough with 3.8ghz boost?

It's not that workstation boards are bad, it's that they are usually a odd size, not easy to find replacements, power might not be standard.  If you are getting this as a workstation the DDR3 in it might be ECC, not a bad thing but can't mix with normal DDR3 if you plan to add more.  Workstation boards also likely don't have things like extra fan headers, likely no ability to OC.

Ryzen 2600 - Sapphire Pulse Vega 56 - Corsair Vengeance LED DDR4 3000 C15 2x8GB - Corsair Force MP500 NVMe PCIe M.2 240GB - 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB -

AsRock B450 PRO4 - Deepcool Earlkase Case -  Seasonic Foucus+ 650

You asked if workstation boards were bad so I gave you some insight into what to expect from one.

Someone assumes you will be buy server/workstation board.
Xeon E5-1620 will work with standard X79 boards as well.

Didn't assume. He asked about a HP Z series board.

Xeon is better. All mainstream consumer CPUs from Intel are failed Xeons. All of them. A 8700k, is a failed Xeon. That said you have to watch pricing, don't over pay for a Xeon or you lose the benefit.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
