I have decided to build myself a rackmount PC/Server to use for learning with. I will be using Proxmox for the OS.

I will be running a few VM's on the system such as

1. Pi-hole

2. Plex server

3. Web server for development

4. Other VM's for testing

I already have a SSD & WD Red 2TB drive for local storage, mass storage will be a NAS I already have. The system will be going in a 2u short depth chasis i already have and I need the system to be as quiet as possible.

I've been looking at motherboard's and CPU's to use and come up with this list, https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/q7cP7W

Are there any Issues with the choices or anything need changing? Any other recommendations?

If you were to go with Ryzen, here is something to consider if you're going to run something like Hyper-V for your virtualization.

Also if you're going for quiet and rack mounting is a must, maybe consider 4U since you'll be able to fit much larger (and quieter) fans. 2U cases can only fit something like an 80mm fan.

There's no place like ~

Never used AMD so will take a look at that list, thanks.

I already have the 2u case so will stick with it for a while and see how it goes. Problem is the cabinet it's going in is only short depth, any case needs to be around 350mm depth.
