I'm currently running a GTX 1060 and 1080p gaming requires quite a bit of compromise.

I'm quite sensitive to stutter, like when it drops from 60 to 57, the stutter is ungodly.

Unfortunately G Sync monitors are stupidly expensive and I cannot use Freesync (obviously).

I can get a Vega 64 for about AUD$699 and a Freesync monitor for about  AUD$180.

However, I know Navi will be making its way sometime next year (probably 2nd half) and Nvidia's next line up is stupidly expensive and GPU prices of older products (like the current GTX 10xx series and Vega) are unlikely to drop.

What do you guys think? Would it be wise to get a Vega 64 now or is it better to wait for Navi?

A 1060 is basically perfectly matched for 1080p, ideally you won't stutter at all.

That said, I can't honestly recommend Vega until AMD fixes the thermal and power issues. You should be able to find a 1070 used though, for less than the Vega 64.

Older GPU prices already have dropped quite a bit, at least on the used market.

I could get a GTX 1070 for $250 USD used. A few months ago I'd be lucky to have gotten one for $400.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I know that's what everyone says, but the 1060 is not perfectly matched to 1080p. You need to do quite a bit of compromising to keep the framerate above 60. Either the games look like arse at 60 FPS or look decent with stutter.

Not sure what the power and thermal issues are. I'll check them out to see if I should be concerned about them.

No, I'm not buying used hardware from overseas (or anywhere else). If it comes faulty, I'd have a hell of a time returning it and getting my money back.

Vega consumes a lot of power and kicks out a lot of heat. It can be solved by undervolting, but it's usually more hassle than people want with a new GPU.

What's your max budget for a new GPU?

Well, I'm thinking of $1000 for GPU and monitor. However, I want Freesync.

No way I'm paying over $500 for a G Synch monitor.

Yeah, the this point of this endeavour is not to lower settings.

A cheaper way to do it is to get a more powerful GPU than the 1060 that can more consistently push your resolution and refresh rate, removing the need for any kind of frame sync. That's just my personal recommendation, something like a 1070 would be a good option.

Unfortunately that still leaves the issue of stutter when dropping below 60 FPS. With a Freesync or Gsync monitor, I couldn't care less if the game was running at 40 FPS.

Perhaps I should just do a 30 FPS lock with half refresh rate. Headache inducing but better than stuttery 40-50 FPS.

Yeah, the 7nm appears to be server only. Ugh! I hate that there's no viable options other than Nvidia!
