2080 and 2080 ti benchmarks are out. I am in debate with myself so I have to say and ask this. I can't justify the price of the 2080 ti because of how much of a leap in performance is though the card is incomplete as of now without the updated Directx12 and the games to support it.

I pre-ordered the EVGA 2080 XC for $749.99 plus shipping making it about $765 after everything when pre-orders were available. So considering the fact that I only spent $50 more than the MSRP. 1080 ti prices are around the same margin unless you can find some on sale. But I think I got a good deal, but then again I am having second thoughts on this.

My goal with all this is to try and get 1080p at 144hz which obviously the 980 ti kind of struggles to achieve and mostly doesn't achieve this goal. So I am wanting to hear other people's thoughts on this purchase since now the 2080 I purchased is now being sold at $799 which I think they wanted to do in the first place but failed so now they have to honor what they had posted. Do you think my purchase was good or should I jump off and go for a 1080 ti or just wait for next series of cards?

A 2080 Isn't truthfully made for 1080p gaming only, if you were going to get a 2080 for simply just 1080p gaming then honestly you would be wasting your money. Ideally a gtx 1060 or a 1070 would be optimal.

My current code projects

--------------------------------

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D

Current repair projects

------------------------------

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew )
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

Since 2080 loses to the 1080ti at 1080p by a tiny bit (it only wins in 4K. 1440p they are even), I'd say getting the 2080 is a bad decision. Unless you really want half-arsed raytracing capabilities, that is.

Also a 980 ti is capable of 1080p gaming just fine, no upgrade is needed.

Going from the benchmarks, Turing loves higher resolutions.

Also worth noting that the 980Ti is roughly equal to a 1070 in performance.

Under load I am just under 1350 mhz I never overlocked a graphics card and I just barely got into the overclocking business with my cpu 8086k I won from a giveaway at 5ghz

Also another note for other people which I believe doesn't change performance that I am running dual monitors for my streaming channel.

I get it can do 1080p but the issue is that it can't be consistent with 144hz with my Asus monitor. :(

If you're using NVENC to do streaming pick up a cheap 1080ti soon, probably near $600

Yea considering the fact I managed to grab a 2080 for $50 more than MSRP and thinking back and looking at the price difference if I were to go strictly EVGA cards for 1080 ti

Didn't Linus say the 20 series cards do NVENC better?  If he is streaming then maybe a 2080 is a better option.

Edit:

I can't tell if he is saying that NVENC was updated so it performs better or if the 20 series cards will handle it better with the update.

No, just no. There's a reason why people buy high-end GPUs for "low" resolutions. In this case 1080p.

There is no reason to get something so overkill, you'd get basically the same visuals from a 1070ti/1080
