I must be in the wrong business then...

I've seen it happen two different ways before, and I wouldn't assume for a second that I've identified all possible pathways :P

  1. They're clearing out "old stock" and just give it away to anyone who wants it. This might sound like you get garbage but we got a laptop that now acts as a perfectly competent HTPC this way
  2. They actually just don't care that you have stuff (or are so disorganized they don't realize it) and let you leave the company without giving it back.  In this case the specs were garbage but I'm not sure that was necessarily a factor

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

so it could be legit?....

It could be, some companies will, in fact, just give them to their employees once they are no longer needed. I have three different laptops due to this.

Its a little odd that he won't give you the serial number in order to verify it isn't stolen. However, it may not be. I would ask him to be able to verify that the device isn't stolen. He should be understanding of that since its common on Craigslist. If not, then personally I'd walk away. You could meet him in person and call apple at the time of meeting and verify that it isn't reported stolen.

I asked him about the serial number and this is what he said:

"No sorry no serial number will be shared nor will a picture of the receipt they can both be seen on collection and in that way I know no one can use the serial number to claim a free replacement as it’s still under warranty and also no one can use my receipt photo for there own add. No offence to you mate I’ve just been selling to long not to be bummed over. "

None of those are possible you need to hand in the actual laptop to Apple to get a replacement to determine whether it’s actually broken. The receipt is not needed in this scenario. Apple themselves determine whether it is damaged or if it can be fixed within a timeframe.

The guys a crook.

If the seller is smart enough to blur out the serial number, I'm sure he/she knows the true value of the laptop.
I wouldn't buy it.

He also said this "I can have it shipped yes once Bank transfer is made and complete I can have next day delivery arranged. "

That is very high risk. Personally, I would walk away.

he also only will accepts bank transfer,

"Bank transfer only to post no PayPal or cheque or Nigeria cashier postal orders."

would that be even more of a reason not to buy? is there some sort of thing where i pay the money and the seller only gets the money once its shipped

Still sounds too sketchy for my liking.
Have you confirmed the price is £250 not £2500?

Yes, that leaves a lot of red flags. Especially "no PayPal or cheque or Nigeria cashier postal orders", Nigeria is highly known for scamming people in this way.

Wire transfers cannot be reversed once sent. It leaves you absolutely no protection.

Ive asked him about a few things this is what i said:

"just one question, you said "No sorry no serial number will be shared nor will a picture of the receipt they can both be seen on collection and in that way I know no one can use the serial number to claim a free replacement” but you need ID, and the actual device with you also Apple themselves determine whether it is damaged or if it can be fixed within a timeframe. also the receipt is not needed in this scenario."

It does sound kind of fishy.  In addition to the above advice about running the serial number at the meet, I would also make sure the meet is in a public place.  If you decide to meet them at all.

He said no to meeting in a public place "Cash on collection from L34DY. NO STARBUCKS OR COSTA OR HALFWAY PLACE its my place only and post code is there." Seems fishy and maybe even dangerous.

well he's replied with this: "Price yes is £250 and apple have it so you can request a new one online basically in a nutshell you can get a new one requested if your still in the warranty but they charge your card £200 which stays in a pending balance but do send a new one and then refund the £200 once you send the “broken” one but what people tend to do is of course receive the new one then tell there bank Apple has charged 200 for nothing and get a charge back. If you are still interested I will need postage address and name and again to clarify the reference number must be used
