I've been experiencing freezes/hangs during usage to varying degrees, during both web browsing and games. Games typically are more severe where either the game, after playing for 20-30 minutes, instantly locks up the system and all i can do is move my mouse cursor (Dota 2), or the rest of the system freezes and game audio seems to repeat from the moment of the freeze, but the game continues to run apart from the audio for a little while after (ETS2). While using Chrome, after a varying amount of time, the browser will freeze, and audio continues for a bit. For the games, I have to force off the system, but for Chrome, I can close the brower, and the system seems to recover. All of these events seem to correspond to a system event, which I've attach a screenshot of below from Event Viewer. Information on the warning suggests graphics driver reinstall, with DDU, which I've done without success. The BIOS was previously the release BIOS for the board, which i updated recently since I was already having stability issues. I even re-seated the GPU since that was a solution brought up as well (didn't work), and set all my power settings to High Performance.

Help is greatly appreciated.

System specs:

  • Windows 10 Home 64 bit
  • Asus X470 Crosshair VII Hero (BIOS 0804)
  • AMD R7 2700 (Auto in BIOS)
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 2X8GB 3000 (Auto in BIOS)
  • MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium (Stock clocks)
  • WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB SSD (WDS100T2B0B) (Boot drive)
  • SK Hynix 500GB SSD (HFS500G32TND)
  • Seagate 2TB SSHD (ST2000DX001)
  • EVGA P2 1200 (1200W 80+ Platinum)

Remove your GPU and insert again. Maybe with a little different angle (1 degree difference).

Try underclocking your core and memory and tell us if that helps.

If it does your GPU is not to spec and should be RMAd. If it doesnt' we need to keep searching.

You could also try the other way around. Does it get worse, whenever you overclock?
It seems you have already taken all common steps to adress this issue.

Have you tried using an older NVIdia driver yet?

I saw it, but I added some small info after that.

I have some old motherboard and I plug graphics card into it. I must re-seated it 3 times to start it works. I don't care because it's just trash mainboard (I made some crappy pc just for fun using old components) but it was reason that my system stops working or computer don't even starts. Cleaning PCI-E connector and reseating it in proper angle, and everything works.

I never had man issues with ram or GPUs of not recognizing properly so i just assumed it is very uncommon, in fact so uncommon it should definitely be fixed if the user has already gone out of his way to intentionally reseat the component.

And you're probably right. But some mainboards may be old and PCI-E port weak (most of producers made now strengthened PCI-E ports - because heavy graphics cards damages these ports sometimes - for example https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/b150m-bazooka.html).

Could not be sure because I am not an AMD user but could you boot the machine without the graphics card installed and use the CPU's onboard graphics chip? If you can or cannot then try display driver uninstaller (DDU) from Guru3D.com (you may have heard of or used GPU-Z) to completely remove all traces of the ATI video card drivers.

Please, follow the instructions for use over at Guru3D.com

hope this helps

Just out of interest @OrphanAnnie when you installed the Nvidia driver do you check the "Perform a clean installation" radio button?

This image is a bit old as the driver release date is 2016.8.30 but is still a valid question.

Also the CPU shouldn't have any graphics drivers for it since it doesn't have any on-board graphics, and I never installed any Radeon drivers

@GER_T4IGA I'll see if either of these work. Perplexing though how I was able to apply an overclock when i first got the card, and i never really raised voltage much at all. I've had it since June, so that would be astonishing to me if components degraded that quickly.

So underclocking my GPU seemed to help...but only in games oddly. When i was just on my browser, i eventually got the freezing. After both fixes (underclocking/install older driver), I would get freezing.

If you do try the display driver uninstaller (DDU) from Guru3D.com as mentioned previously, you may need to monitor your Windows updates for any GPU drivers or at the very least set your updates to pause until the issue is identified.

I don't seem to have that option :(

When I was reinstalling the drivers though, I did have my Ethernet cable unplugged. Would Windows still be able to install a driver when offline?

@OrphanAnnie try this:

Select Win key + I  > Update and Security  >  Windows Update  >  Advanced Options.

*Nb. The forum Font displays a capital i as I and this is not an l (lower case L) because that combination will lock the machine. :)

Also, regardless of whether you have a WiFi or Ethernet connection, you can set these to metered connections.

WiFi

Select Win key + I  >  Network and Internet  >  Wi-Fi  >  Manage known networks  >  Select the Wi-Fi network  >  Properties  >  turn on Set as metered connection.

Ethernet

Select Win key + I  >  Network and Internet  >  Ethernet  >  Select your Ethernet network  >  turn on Set as metered connection.

Then as in the previous image ensure the "Automatically download updates..." option is set to off.

@OrphanAnnie

I am reaching the end of my knowledge of how to help you more, sorry.

But anyway try: Select Win key + I  > Update and Security  >  Windows Update  >  Advanced Options  >  Delivery Optimisation  >  Advanced Options

5ba84520617c8_Deliveryoptimisation.png.76962962cbf96f6be8c1b1176922f8e9.png

Then limit the amount of bandwidth for downloading updates.

Because we are on different versions of Windows 10, I think this is about as much as I can suggest, however, if you are into monitoring what your OS is doing you can download Spybot Anti-Beacon for free.
