Is it worth getting an RTX 2080ti over a GTX 1080 ti?

I need this PC to last around 7 years, so ill need to upgrade quite a bit.

This has already been anwsered 100s of times in the past 2 weeks. If you need a card now, get a GTX 1080 TI, if you can wait a week, then we can see reviews/bencnhmarks.

Depends on what resolution, framerate, and settings you're targeting. If you're wondering which one will last the longest amount of time without having to even think about upgrading it, that goes to the 2080 TI. As for value? I can't give you a definitive answer until the inevitable Day 1 dump of benchmarks for the 2080 Ti release.

 

P.S, I don't know what prices are like in Australia, but the 8700K is just the 8086K, but slightly lower clockspeeds. Better idea to go with the 8700K.

No, it is not by a long shot. If you have a perfectly fine 1080ti, there is no point in switching. Just wait till you actually need to upgrade, which will probably be in 7 years

I would say get the newest tech if you are planning for it to last 7 years. Pascal is already 2 years old at this point....

But, I would wait for benchmarks before i made the final deciscion.

 

Why aren't you getting a NVME ssd instead of the SATA ssd?

pretty sure you can skip the next 2 gens at least if u wait for the 9900k, good single threaded performance with 8c/16T.

As for the video card, i dont think neither of these cards will last 7 years, ray tracing may be mainstream in 2-3 years, the 1080 ti simply doesnt support it and the 2080 ti barely does 1080p/60fps with RT on. Personally in your case i'd pick up a 1080 ti right after benchmarks for the 2080 ti come out.

 

The only reason i pre-ordered the 2080 ti was just so i can somewhat game at 4k/98hz, not for the ray tracing, though it'll be fun to turn that +DLSS on for the ocasional game that supports it, if that's not a concern for you then the 1080 ti is a better deal.

GTX 980ti to RTX 2080ti will be an amazing upgrade...i think you'll be blown away by the performance honestly.

and on friday i got a 1080ti for cheap to replace my 1080 which i sold and again the performance boost is defenetly instantly noticeable.

 

I can only imagine the performance of the 980ti vs 2080ti when the dust settle and new games come out i'm sure will be in the ballpark of 2X.

you're moving from a GPU with 1920 cuda cores and 8GB GDDR5 to a GPU with 3584 cuda cores and 11GB of GDDR5X

this is a +86.66% in cuda core count alone...GTX 1070 is weak compared to 1080ti for sure.

Yeah, especially since they're both unlocked, you can just overclock the 8700K a little bit to beat the performance of the 8086K @ stock speeds.
