I want to setup a home server for various little tasks (NAS, print server etc) and one of them is, believe or not, running visual novels, so that I can read them on my cell via RD. As I'm using a core 2 duo machine, I've planned to use server 2008 x86 - to be as lightweight as it gets, but here is a problem.

When I tested RD on my win 7 notebook (i5 4th gen, connected via LAN), I got a really choppy stream, 10-15FPS at best at 720p, whereas my PC (Xeon 2gen) , running win 10, connected to the same switch, gave me a perfect quality 1080p stream, which even worked for playing YT.

Is that caused by windows 7's limitations? - If so, I assume, Vista based serv 2008 would be the same and I need to use newest serv 2016, right?

Well I could use 10 Pro x86 but then there are some server features I might want to have and I've got some student keys either way.

Well don't care about the support, as it's just a home server, nothing fancy nor important really. Linux is obviously completely out of the question as it would not do almost any of the tasks I want it to do :) BTW I meant 2008, not 2008 r2.

Yes you do, running a system with no security updates thats connected to the net a horrible idea. Remember wannacry?

Why not run linux?

Even it the entire machine just burned in flames I wouldn't care much TBH :) No worries, I'm not even sure that it will be able to run 24/7 without breaking either way.

-won't run VNs

-no MS RD, which is just a great service

-need SMB server (possible on linux but why bother)

-need print server for windows clients (again possible on linux but why bother)

-have legal access to Win Server

Then just run 2016, its a good amount better, and suports newer more advanced features and is more secure.

I've read sth about RD just now and it all seams to be clear now, Win 10 got never RD with better compression, so most likely I have no choice but to install 2016, hope that old c2d won't be too slow though :/

The requirements of different versions of windows is about the same, so speed will be about the same.

Windows 10 should have the same remote desktop as server 2016 for most features.

But server 2016 is lighter weight than win 10 and can have 2 rdp sessions at the same time so might as well run it.

that seems like a really backwards way of doing things in my opinion. I never seen a visual novel, is it like a movie file? or something interactive?

its literally just some anime shit, its like a slide show of pitctures with captions.

ok, now i understand the complication. I guess i was thinking it was more static than that

Edit

After some google, a windows based soultion seams the only feesable route. you could do it with linux:

I guess the question is are you paying for the licenses or do you have them already, server licenses are pricey
