My HP laptop used to work well until about a month ago, it started to get lag spikes and would do weird stuff(what i mean by that is it lags in games).about two weeks ago games would seriously lag like 15-->20 fps instead of 40-->50fps. i tried to identify the problem but couldnt, but i guess it has to do with the GPU's load cause once it hits the 100% usage mark it lags. and when gets 98% it goes back up to 45 fps, thats why in loading screens and before the start of a match its smooth but when i start playing it goes down

so the real question im asking is: How can i cap my GPU's load to 95% instead of 100%??

BTW i have a GTX 950M in my laptop and i7-6 something, and the laptop is about 3.5  years old

thanks to who ever answers this or try to help out!!

Welcome to the LTT forums! Have you ever opened your laptop up to clean it? What is likely occurring is that your GPU is thermal throttling, you probably need to open up your laptop and clean the dust out.

It looks like it hit a limit where the gpu throttles to prevent damage.

I would suggest using a software like afterburner to check wether the GPU is throttle and how the temperature is rising.

If it is temperature (which is most likely) you could use a ventilated pad to help the temps. I would go as far as changing the thermal compound (depending on how comfortable and old it is.)

sounds like dust to me, with the information given..

laptops have a tendency to over time build up a quite intense "dustcake" on the heatsink, where the fan blows onto it.

it's a bitch to get out if you cannot disassemble the laptop, but it's most likely the cause given your laptop is 3.5 years old.

i am using a cooling pad and helped with temps.. it used to hit 90C in benchmarks btu now at max it reaches 80C.

(forgot to mention it in the main question)

but its not heat problems

im using a cooling pad and getting temps of 80C

does it still affect even without the heat??

depends on which temperature it starts throttling at.

have you ever cleaned out dust from the laptop?

i never cleaned it ever

and there is no specific tempreture, cause in valley benchmark sometimes at 72C and sometimes at 80C (max temp was 80C)

but in games it would start lagging instantly and the lag wont go

valley benchmark was using 100% but was lagging but once every minute for 3 seconds only idk why

Yeah that is likely software trying to keep it from over heating, download MSI afterburner if you want to tamper with that (P.S. higher temps = more wear and tear on the card, this appears in forms of thermal fatigue that causes cracks in solder joints due to the fact that the material involved in the production of GPUs expand and contract differently, this can also result in accelerated degradation of the capacitors).
