Hi, so I am building a computer and I will be making rolling upgrades to it. I will be Water cooling the CPU at the very least, though hopefully the graphics card once I get the one I will actually be using for longer than the one I have now. My question is as follows: Is the Core I7-2700K, Core I7-3700K, Core I7-3700, Core I7=2700, Xeon E3-1225, or Xeon E3-1290 v2 better for overclocking? Atm I have a Pentium G630 and a Radeon HD 8490 graphics card. I will be upgrading to one of those six cpu's after I upgrade the graphics card to something in the titan range or maybe a 1080ti, though I am thinking the titan, simply due to the power. Also, any star wars jokes are highly appreciated.

non-K CPUs and Xeons can only be overclocked by 400MHz, so they arent good choices in your case.

also what motherboard will you use?

at 1080p, the CPU (anything socket LGA 1155) will bottleneck unless you pour liquid nitrogen on it.

what resolution will you be playing at, at 1080p thats going to bottleneck no matter what chip you pick. the 3700K would be the best one of them, the 2700K or 2600K arent that bad either. If you want to keep to a DDR3 platform id go for 4th gen and an I7 4790K

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I hadn't decided, and still havent, however your information has made me decide to upgrade the motherboard when I am able to, before even the graphics card. So what socket should I upgrade to?

What will you do with the PC first?

These aren't the CPUs you're looking for.

Go all out with a 3770k, max out your platform. Reduce all of the bottleneck you can, and I recommend a 280mm radiator if your case supports it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

What's the brand and model of your motherboard?  Usually Pentiums are paired with entry level motherboards that don't have any overlocking feature.

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770
GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti

I am building it in a desk drawer, ATM I have an HP PRO 6300 however I was gonna upgrade it to a motherboard I could overclock on after i got the rest of the parts upgraded, and I will be doing school on it and gaming, especially No Man's Sky, Skyrim, and Defiance.

then you should be finding the 4th gen 4770k and 47902k, with Z87 or Z97 motherboard

From your first post, I get the distinct feeling that you want to stick to an Socket 1155 setup, however, finding OC-capable motherboards for that socket might be a challenge. Usually it's second hand stuff.

Why not go with a Ryzen or newer generation Intel stuff with OC capability?

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770

well, the main purpose of this build was for me to run No Mans Sky, but I am on a ridiculously tight budget. 20, MAYBE thirty dollars a month for as many parts as i can get, so i basically built it around the motherboard i got on ebay for about 11 dollars. so i am gonna be getting that up and running, then i will be building a new one around hopefully an I9, but maybe a ryzen 5 or 7. i had originally wanted Threadripper but no good since that isnt built for gaming.

Socket 1336? That's quite pricey.

yeah, i found that out. then i found this video by LTT. it sounds like what i am wanting. i am gonna finish up the comp i am building, sell it, and build one like they built in the video
