Is it muted?

Check the settings for it.  You will want to make sure it's selected as the default device, it's not muted, it's turned up, and if a "Boost" is available, you'll probably want to crank that.  Try speaking into it and make sure you register on the green volume meter.

it picks up the mic when i am connected to the mic in port, but not when it is in the headphone port.

That would be expected behaviour.  Wait, you're not trying to use a TRRS combo jack are you?  If so you'll need to split it into headphones and mic

The microphone port doesn't output audio and the headphone port doesn't receive audio.

I have one of these now, but it send the audio to the headset and not over e.g. discord. what do i do?

I have the same headset it should have came with its own splitter. Also download the steelseries software and setup your mic
