Used computer checklists

When buying a used computer what do you bring along (hardware/software)?

What tests do you make? (Keep in mind the seller doesn't have all day to let you tinker)

Things to look out for?

Tips & tricks?

that wouldnt matter unless the machine was custom or the serial sticker was removed

It would. I bought a laptop from a pawn shop one time and that was the case.

The previous owner re-installed a "cracked" version of vista on it.

buuut you can just get a uncracked vista iso and then activated it with the oem serial on the laptop

I wouldn't care if it was genuine or not. I would do a clean install if you value your security.

I know, but the key on the bottom actually got black-listed. I ended up calling MS and getting a high support tier get it unblocked.

I think the issue was related to the oem slp key.

I did that anyway, but for people who may not have a windows key handy or had a technet subscription, it would cost alot of money (unless you bought an oem install disk)
