What happens when I use RAM that is faster than what my CPU supports?

HelixEon

So I bought a kit of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) at 3200MHz and was wondering what would happen it I was to pair it with my Ryzen 2600 which has a max RAM speed of 2933MHz.

the ram will down clock to a speed you can run it at. so wasted some $$ pretty much

Well I got the kit for $89 so not that much compared to slower RAMs.

Not true.

RAM has an XMP profile which allows it to run at speeds higher than the supported JEDEC speeds of the CPU automatically when selected. AMD doesn't have XMP since that is an Intel thing, but they have their own equivalent which usually works or the RAM can just be manually overclocked to the advertised speed.

thats just to allow the ram to run at the speeds its advertised, if you have 3200 ram it will run at 1600 unless you enable XMP. or AMP for AMD

Umm that's pretty much what the OP was asking

Any non Z series intel board will not use XMP.  AMD setups will generally not go much above 3000 without manual tuning.

no because it will not not run at higher then the CPU allowes even if you use XMP faggot

If you have a Z series board on the Intel platform it does.  Technically Ryzen only "supports" 2666, and everything over that is "overclocking"
