Which space strategy to try?

Here's a vote for Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment (it's included in the Trinity version, along with other pre-Rebellion DLCs), it's still my favourite SoaSE. Rebellion's titans made the game feel too much like cat and mouse at times, while Diplomacy just added depth to diplomatic paths. Entrenchment's star bases add a lot of new strategies without hindering the feasibility of different kinds of fleets too much.

Fragile Allegiance is also a great choice if you can stomach its age. It could really use a modern sequel (how many games today let you corner and entirely wipe out your opponent's planetoids by slamming other massive hunks of rocks at them?)

Screenshots on google for Fragile allegiance reminds me a lot of Master of orion 2.

Masters of Orion 2 would get my nod, but keep in mind it is rather old. On the positive side, it is really cheap now. To me it had the right balance of progression and strategy like the older Civ games had before graphics ruined everything.

I have some version of Galciv and stellaris, but they didn't do it for me.

Star Ruler 2 is open source now and can be downloaded for free. One of the best space strategy games in my opinion. Then there is also Sword of the Stars.

Star Trek Birth of the Federation with the Ultimate Dominion Mod is also worth a look if you are into Star Trek.
