Well, how much sense it makes to play a game that is very fast and requires 60fps to play well because its a very fast game, on almost 20 year old hardware is for everyone to decide.

But something to consider:
Back in 2007 when the Core 2 Duo 8k Series was introducd, when you would have made a thread asking for what games you could play with your 166MHz Pentium, people would laugh at you and not take you seriously.

That you can play games with such old hardware is only because of the quasi monopoly since the Core i Series and because everyone buys Intel anyway, even if there are good alternatives. With a good competition, you wouldn't be able to even start the game, let alone run it.

And here you can see what was going on back in 1996 - roughly 11 years before 2007 wich is roughly 11 Years before now:

Personally, I don't think 720p with 30fps is playable. To me playable means smooth and 30fps is not smooth.

While I would normally disagree with you, in this case I won't because we are talking about DOOM. And for that I have to agree.

For other games that are more at home on consoles, 30fps isn't really a problem at all and they can play really well. DOOM, not so much...

If you once played DOOM, you know how crazy fast that is and that you really don't want it with less than 60fps.

Or maybe that we're at a point where the logical portion of games have been optimized pretty well for general cases, are good enough as far as making the game fun, and publishers would really like for developers to target as low as possible to maximize their target market.

Not to mention that many things that used to be done on the processor no longer are. The only thing that is still stuck on the processor is AI and I don't imagine that becoming any more advanced because what value does it add? I guess we could have smarter AI, but then the game starts becoming less fun.

I agree with all of the above. Again it was mostly a test to see what was possible, I'm interested in strange things I guess.

My system:

Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-Bit

Mainboard: Optiplex 7010 MT [0GY6Y8]

Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K @3.5 GHz (3.8 GHz Boost)

Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics Card: Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini

SATA_0 [SATA III] - Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB [Windows - UEFI]

SATA_1 [SATA III] - Kingston A400 120 GB [Programs]

SATA_2 [SATA II] - Western Digital Black Performance 6 TB [Games]

SATA_3 [SATA II] - Western Digital Black Performance 6 TB [Games]

The CPU and RAM are my weak points, however, neither affects any of my games negatively, especially when I'm playing in 4K .
