New RX 580 vs Used GTX 1070

Good evening LTT Forum, recently i have been getting into Final Fantasy 15 and ran into a major problem. At ultra settings at 1080p the game was asking for 6gb of video memory, and since i have a 970 which has 4ish gb of ram, made my pc crash. So i'm am considering buying a new gpu but collage has me really strapped for cash. Buying a 1070 new is way out of my league and getting a 1060 is barely scrapping over the vram requirement, so on newegg a RX 580 is at $239 new and on amazon a used EVGA black edition 1070 is at $309 but used. There is another thing to consider however, i play alot of console ports of jrpg's which generaly have poor optimization for amd cards (mainly the neptunia series). What are the pro and cons of each?

nah dont bother. 1060 6gb and RX 580s are only a little bit faster than your 970, and I can assure you frame rates will be bad at 1080p ultra in FF!5. I tried with 1070 and still get dips below 60fps

Does the vram amount matter all that much?, i'm also thinking about getting black ops 4

It "matters", but you'll really feel it in higher resolution.

Oh wait, I didn't really read your first post, sorry.

I just saw Final Fantasy 15's specs recommendation and it recommended GTX 1060 6GB. The extra VRAM helps, but might not by much.... GTX 970 performs similarly to a 1060, you can try lowering the graphics settings first if it's really burdening the GPU.

Well the 1070 is way faster than a 580 but since it's used I can't really tell the condition.

I'm currently running the game at average settings but since i'm a snob i want that eye candy and seeing that the card dips massively in performance after i reach above 3.5 gb of vram makes me think that the extra vram on the rx 580 could help

yeah, but compute core performance matters even more than VRAM/

They're not far from each other in overall gaming performance, the extra VRAM does help in a way but I can't really say how big is the performance difference in that game though.

Something to consider, the RX580 is hotter and I believe draws more power than a 1060.

Personally, I went with an MSI RX580 Armor Mk 2 (it's a bit more expensive for an RX580) since it has 8GB of VRAM, is overclocked out of the box, and allows me to get a FreeSync 144Hz 1080p monitor. Not that you can get the monitor, being a college student and all, but for future...it's cheaper than GSync monitors for NVIDIA cards.

That said, it doesn't matter much either way. I'd be reluctant to buy used - the seller could have broken it and had it refurbished, or could have overclocked the hell out of it in a poorly ventilated case until it thermal throttled 90% of its life. A 1060 or an RX580 would do well in 1080p gaming in general...above that and you'll have issues with either card. And yeah, as was mentioned, FFXV in Ultra settings is hard on most cards.

I'd personally try to avoid a used GPU if at all possible. As mentioned before by a previous reply; you just don't know what issues it may have once its cranked up, etc. There are tons of used cards because of mining, etc which is a real concern. I have both a 1070 and a 580 and can tell you for sure that 1070 is a better performing card in the games that I play. Also as previously mentioned a 1060 uses much less power than a 580 if that is a concern.

I haven't played Final Fantasy 15 yet. If I can find a good deal on the game, I wouldn't have a problem doing a comparison for you. I like JRPG's so it really wouldn't break my heart to do it. How quickly are you looking to pull the trigger and purchase?

I might be able to borrow a 1060 6GB card from a friend but that's just a maybe.

I'll look around for a deal on the game.

It looks like there's a playable free demo on Steam. I'll download and install it tonight/tomorrow and check it out.

This might just answer the question though without me having to do work. I'll install and play around because the video was made prior to the final release of the game and maybe there are better drivers available. It sounded like there were plenty of NVIDIA proprietary technologies used for some of the eye candy and I can test 1440P. I'm curious about how well it does Ultrawide
