Gaming, multitasking, or even a small bit of editing

if you're multitasking between normal programs then 8GB is enough, but if you're multitasking with really heavy programs then that's a different story.

but in my opinion i think 16GB should be a standard these days, much more headroom and peace of mind, but i don't think its necessary though, depending on what you're doing.

you should know your RAM usage and be familiar with it, if you think you need 16GB then go for it.

Can we now say that in 2018 16 gb of ram is essential or do you think it's still a bit overkill?

wouldn't say its essential if you're only gaming, i have never played a game so far that maxed out my 8GB.

but if for example you like to game and multitask at the same time, then you might run out of 8GB pretty easily, depending on the programs.

I would say 12 would be a better balance for the average joe. You have the extra headroom without breaking the bank for the full 16GBs. Of course that means you won't be running dual channel, but that shouldn't matter for them anyways.

i always recommend Dual Channel depending on the CPU, if you have a high performance CPU and GPU and you wanna take full advantage of your hardware then Dual channel is a must, but if you have low end hardware like an i3 or a Pentium then sure you can get 12GB's in single channel and call it a day.

but ofc for Ryzen Dual channel is always a must, no matter how low end.
