R9 290 High idle temp

bzdsftw

Hey guys.

I recently bought a 290 a few days ago and performance is really great. However whenever I turn on my pc, (take note ambient temp is about 26-30deg c), The card idles at 50c. After awhile of browsing and playing a game, the card idles at 67-70deg c at desktop. This had 0 impact on performance though. Do note im using a fractal r4. I'm using the lastest amd beta drivers. Please advise me if i should rma the card.

ty very much

Is it a nonreference 290 or a reference 290 cooler?

If its the Gigabyte Windforce then you should RMA it since there is a known issue with them. If it's reference then I'm not surprised by your numbers.

IF i remember correctly when i had my Sapphire R9 290X in my rig after gaming it would idle @65c. They are designed to run at 95 so your idle temps are going to be higher than normal cards. They also take a longer time to cool down.Thats why i slapped a Vapor X cooler on it.

Check it out (shameless plug) http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/95948-r9-290x-with-vapor-x-cooler

If it's using the gpu then yes because the way AMD set up the software it'll run up to 95C before it'll start cooling the card much

alright it's bumped down to 69 idle steady now. if corrected to ambient temp of 22c, it should be idling around 65. can i get a green light from you guys if you think it's normal with this card and to go ahead and put this guy underwater?

If you can water cool it your card will do a lot better, because the reference cooler sucks balls.
