I'm not very familiar with what all the different specs are and what they mean so any information or links to help me learn would be awesome and/or just a list of what I should be looking for when it comes to purchasing a gaming laptop, especially with a more affordable one.

Not really happening, do you 100% need a gaming laptop?

What budget/country?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Odds are (regardless of budget) if you're looking for a gaming laptop then you're gonna go team blue (Intel). Intel have a fairly clear way of naming their Core series CPU's that goes beyond i3,i5,i7,i9. All intel processors have a 4 digit code after them, the first number is the generation, the last 3 numbers determines model and specs. There's also a suffix that mobile chips have, U= low power mobile chip, HQ/H = high power mobile chip, HK= overclockable mobile chip. For budget gaming an i5 8300H or (if in a clearance sale) 7300HQ will be a good enough CPU. For GPU it's probably best to go Nvidia, they have the market dominance. Like intel, nvidia's graphics have names too, at the moment they're on the 10 series (20 series is coming next month, probably later for mobile) so their names follow a 10XX naming convention, with one small exception, the MX150 (low power gpu for thin premium laptops). i'd recommend a GTX 1050ti for 1080p gaming or a GTX 1060 for 1444p 60hz/ 1080p 120hz gaming. The amount of V-RAM a GPU has doesn't determine performance, all V-RAM is used for is basically textures. For system RAM (not vram) 8gb DDR4 will fine, most gaming laptops have upgradable ram so adding an extra 8gb stick down the road is worth considering. For storage I'd push for a 120gb SSD (for OS) with a 1tb or 2tb hard drive (for games). For size a 15 inch laptop will be fine, it'll fit in most back packs. While it might not look as sleek, thicker laptops tend to have better cooling and battery life because they have room to fit that stuff in. Also when it comes to batteries, bigger is better if you plan to use it as a daily driver. Acer and Dell have good budget gaming offerings like the Dell G3 (kinda discrete looking) or Acer Nitro (looks more gamery). if you have any questions feel free to ask

####################  CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2500U

####################  GPU: Radeon Vega 8

####################  Ram: 8gb DDR4 2666MHz

####################  SSD: OEM 128gb M SATA

####################  HDD: Seagate Baracuda 1tb 5400RPM
