One of the processes used to make this work is fairly simple and seen everyday. They take the LCD component out of a TV or monitor and mount it to the side panel. The LCD portion of a display is transparent until you send power and signal into it to adjust the crystals. This can produce color or turn the whole thing black and non-transparent as you observed. Not overly complicated.

Even with the LCD removed it can still function with the display's motherboard and ports so likely HDMI or DVI. The board would still be frankenstein attached somewhere nearby. Likely off screen or hidden in the bottom of the PC.

That's because it's not something you can readily buy off the shelf. You'd have to buy a LCD monitor and take it to bits yourself. That's how they do it at these conventions. Totally custom.

Prolly with this
EDIT Translate:

It is not holographic. It is made by using the illusion of the eye by adjusting the image and effect, the object behind the object and the light source on the transmissive liquid crystal.

As said it's done by taking apart and LCD screen but you can buy prebuilt systems that have that done to them like from iBuypower.

You can still customize the case to match your theme. I like the S340 since it's basically a blank canvas but there are many cases that may work depending on your theme.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/
