ESXi is a fantastic Hypervisor - one of the best IMO, but it's a bit different than unRAID, which is more NAS focused.

 

Most commercial ESXi systems use a SAN, as @Electronics Wizardy points out - though there are numerous ways to use the system.

 

For example, I virtualize FreeNAS, then use PCIPassthrough and an HBA Card to give FreeNAS direct access to my HDD's - it works great this way.
