I seriously can't decide

Go to solution Solved by D3addr0p,

Cool looks like I'm going AMD with this build

I may or may not have the funding to continue to get parts for my 4k build at the end of the month depending on various unknown variables.

The problem I am having is with us being on the verge of a new Intel chip release, I don't know what I should get, I will list the pros and cons of each choice below.

Intel 8700k build

Pros: It's readily available, it will perform well with games in 4K and can still do other CPU heavy stuff.

Cons: 6c/12t which isn't bad but compared to other choices it is. Does not come with cooler costing more than Ryzen system.

Ryzen 2700x build

Pros: It's readily available, 8c/16t which would help a lot in CPU heavy tasks. Cheapest option since it comes with cooler.(Might get AIO later on for overclocking).

Cons: Low gaming performance compared to Intel, Not as high clocks as 9900k, have not researched parts and everything in depth for AMD. Heard it does not support a whole lot of RAM and me being in South Africa gives me limited options.

Intel 9900k build

Pros: Best performance build rumored at 5ghz without overclocking. 8c/16t. Soldered IHS.

Cons: Is not going to be available for a few months. Will be very expensive considering no stock cooler.

I don't know what impact the CPU will have on 4k gaming but it might not have a very large impact since I am planning on getting the new GPU's best available model(In 7 - 9 months).

I already have an 850w power supply and an NZXT H700i.

Might also go cheaper on RAM but I don't really want to since this will be a kind of future proof build for a few years and heard RAM makes a big difference on Ryzen system. and Blender.

Games I will be playing will be 99% single player games.

If going with Ryzen can anyone recommend a few builds? Without GPU.

Also any other pros or cons would be helpful since I want to make an informed decision.

Thanks.

What is your budget? AMD and Intel Cpus perform about the same (maybe Intel by a few frames) at 4k, so no problems there.

CPU: I9-7900X RAM: 64GB (16X4) DDR4-2933 GPU: RTX 3080 MOBO: ASUS X299 Deluxe PSU: Corsair RM850 SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 PRO 1TB HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB Case: Corsair iCUE 465X Cooler: Corsair 280 AIO

I could tell you my budget but pricing here in South Africa differs a lot so if I said like R17000 it would most likely convert to about a 1000$ maybe less maybe more.

As far as 4k performance goes they will all perform about the same.

You should look for faster ram if you go the Ryzen route, but compatibility for ram has gotten better since launch- as long as you're going with something well known like gskill, corsair, etc I wouldn't worry about that.

Personally I think your decision will come down to this- do you see yourself wanting to upgrade your cpu again in a couple of years?  If so, you'll probably have that option on Ryzen.  If not, I think the 8700k gives you a little more in the short term.

I'd say either option is fine.  I'd get the 8700 non-k if I went intel right now, or wait for the 9700.  In the US, AMD last gen cpu's (like 1700/1800x) are going really cheap.  Don't know if it's the same there.

If you’re doing more CPU heavy stuff, grab the AMD (unless the programs are really unoptimized, then go Intel) processor. Just watch out for RAM on AMD, you want dual channel at a fast-ish speed (above 2400).

I would say on Ryzen 2933-3200 is best, 2666 at minimum.  And intel supports 2666 by default now.  Maybe only lower speeds/single channel on budget intel builds.

So motherboard wise? Cheapest X470 I can find is Asus tuf x470

I was reading the reviews on that and I would opt for a decent *B450 instead if you want to save money.  Otherwise look for an x470 with the option for 2 8-pins.

MSI x470 gaming pro? Can always get a new MB later but I prefer to do it now if the budget will allow me

Only thing I don't see on the board is SLI support

Honestly then if you want to cheap out on the board and possibly have SLI support affordably then Intel might have more options for you.  But at the same time, I wouldn't cheap out on a board for a high end 4k system.

I've heard a lot of good things about the AsRock Taichi.  Probably the best value among high end boards, but it's up to you.

It looks good only problem would be that it is 100$ more where I live so I might have to go with a budget board for now. Will B450 still support the 2700x?

Nah, 3200 isn't best. Many can hit 3466 at a minimum and I am running 3600 at tight timings and BCLK OC.

Don't get an Asus Tuf. The lowest Asus X470 board you should get is the Prime, but if you want your RAM and CPU to run its best then the Crosshair is what you want.
