I am giving away my old pc and need to install a fresh operating system this is an old FX-55 64bit. I want to try Linux cause its free, what version should I get and should I format the HDD first?

thank you

Ubuntu, Elementary OS (if you like the look of MAC OS) or Linux Mint are the general consensus for starter linux.  They all have big communities with helpful people and lots of how tos.

Yes format the drive.  The system will do it again when installing, but just in case.

You can try ubuntu since it's one of the most popular one's. The installer will prompt to format the HDD when needed

Does this forum Autocorrect Linux to Linus....?

No, but the S and X keys are right next to each other (on English keyboard layouts at least) and Linus won't show as a spelling error so it is an easy mistake to make.

Install Linus and your OS will drop updates, games will drop frames, and the manufacturer will drop support.

But on subject... I second Linux Mint as a good beginning Linux experience.

You need to kidnap Linus from his studio and stuff him inside your PC case.
