I'm helping someone upgrade from a pentium g4400 (dual core, no HT) to an i3 6100 and another 4gb of ddr4 2133, which is just inside the budget. They're using an HD 5750 right now, but would the integrated graphics be better? with only 1gb vram, it's not an impressive card. The plan is to sell it at some point for a handful of dollars and get a gt 1030, but would it be worth selling right now and using iGPU until the new graphics card can get bought? and how does a gt 730 compare to these options as well? It's newer than the 5750 by quite a lot but older than the 1030 by just as much.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

The GT 730 is complete trash, it's not worth it- integrated GPU is better than that the 5750 is roughly 200% better than the IGPU so I'd recommend sticking to that. Get a G4560 (a 4 threaded pentium) instead of an i3 6100- those CPU's are almost the same and the Pentium is way cheaper.

it's about $15 more for the i3, and it has a clock speed advantage while also being just inside budget, but i see that the g4560 has a better iGPU so that might be a better bet against the 5750

Why new parts? Go used, and get an Ivy Bridge or Haswell i5 and 8GB of DDR3. That'll save you a fuckton of money, which you can then spend on a graphics card like a GTX 770 for about $90 USD

i am going for all used parts. it's only about $55 for a g4560 and $74 with free shipping for the i3. he's already got ram, mobo, and everything else, so why switch to haswell and reduce upgradeability?

The G4560 is practically just as good.

That's a complete ripoff for how those parts perform. Haswell has the advantage of using DDR3, which is significantly cheaper than DDR4, and really doesn't perform that differently in terms of gaming. It's also a LOT cheaper if you're getting the right deals. You can get say an i5-4590 for $30-40 USD, and a H97 board for it for about the same price. DDR3 should be no more than $4 per GB.

well idk where you're shopping, but i wish i could get a haswell i5 for less than $80. also, there's still all the work that goes into swapping a mobo, and also pretty sure his psu is cheap and cant handle a 770

he's probably gonna have the cpu for a good while, so the i3's higher clocks would suit the use case better, even if just slightly.

Gumtree/Craigslist, man. Facebook groups as well. You have to offer a bit lower than asking price of course, but you shouldn't be paying more than those amounts for those parts. If you really can't find any of it in your local area, you can always turn to Taobao. Biostar make some surprisingly nice boards.

I can't stand biostar's customer support, but there's always cheap haswell boards on ebay.

edit: i confused biostar for asrock for some reason. I don't have a reason to hate biostar.

Most support I've ever needed from a motherboard manufacturer is the ability to download a PDF version of the manual. You can get more common brands on Taobao too, such as ASUS or ASRock. Prices there are usually a lot more reasonable than eBay, but it depends on what you can and can't find in both places.
