Ayy

Just finished planning my first build.  I plan on using it for rendering simulations and some esports titles.  <1000 Budget, <900 if possible.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qwsLFt

--SPECS---

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 - Good enough for what I plan on doing.

CPU Cooler:  Wraith Spire - Stock Ryzen 5 Cooler.

Motherboard:  MSI B350 PC Mate - I dislike the Tomahawk's red, and this is cheaper.  Plan on overclocking.

Memory: Team - Vulcan 16GB DDR4 - 3000 - Cheap 16GB RAM

SSD: Inland 240 GB SSD - For windows and some games.

HHD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM HHD

GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 580 8GB Nitro+

Case: NZXT H500 White

PSU: EVGA 650W 80+ Gold Semi-Modular

WIFI: Asus PCE-AC51 PCIe 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

Suggestions welcome

:)

I have too much time on my hands.

MSI's B350 boards aren't very good, especially for overclocking. If you're just going to use the stock cooler and won't upgrade, the cheaper Pro4 would be fine. If you're going to upgrade to a better cooler later, consider a better motherboard.

There's a 1TB Toshiba HDD for $2 less than the WD one. There's absolutely no reason to pay extra for the WD one.

If possible, don't use wi-fi. Try to use an ethernet cable, or use a Homeplug/powerline system.

I would recommend an Asus board yes they cost more but it is worth it

That's objectively not true in most cases. All of Asus' B350 and B450 boards use the same 4 phase VRM, essentially making the $115 B350F the same thing as the B350M-E, just with heatsinks and more RGB.

Would you recommend a better chipset or a better motherboard?  Ethernet is terrible in my house, not an option. :|

A better motherboard. MSI has updated their 4 phase VRM on B450, so those might be decent, if they have heatsinks. @dave_k is the AM4 guy.

How can ethernet be terrible? How is it messed up?

Port on the wall behind my desk plain dosn't work last time I checked.  Next working port is way to far away.

Is there a difference between the B450 Gaming Plus/B450-A PRO/B450 Tomahawk?  Afaict its just rgb and colors.

I have too much time on my hands.

You could just run a cable. Or the Homeplug/powerline option, which uses the electrical cables.

:)

Is there a reason to go for this over the MSI?

Huh,  I'll look into that.

Depending on your living situation, it might also be worth looking into running your own cabling. It can be a fun project on its own, and a skill you'll find useful the rest of your life. (Wiring is one of those things that actually comes up a lot more than anyone ever talks about, but mostly because no one thinks about it until it breaks.)

Powerline-based systems can also work really well. Better than Wireless, not as good at direct cabling.

As for the build, looks fine. Some good suggestions for alternate parts in the thread. A B450 board might be worth it over a B350, but it just depends on quality & price.

There is a small chance that two 1x8GB memory kits will not operate in dual channel. Besides, it doesn't offer any significant savings: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series, (the gray heatsink version is on the motherboard 1x00 cpu memory QVL)

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Sorry, first build.  What does this mean?

Memory Qualified Vendor List - a list of memory kits that have been tested with the motherboard and cpu. This is important with 1st gen Ryzen cpu in particular as the memory controller is a bit picky. It's not that much of a problem with other current cpu.

K, thanks.

Is there a good cheap alternative to the evga psu?  I don't need that high of a wattage anymore.

I have too much time on my hands.
