using PSU PCI-e cable for CPU power

Go to solution Solved by Crunchy Dragon,

That shouldn't be possible in the first place, the keying between CPU power and PCIe power is different.

That said, the PCIe connector won't be able to supply as much power as the CPU connector will, but that likely won't be noticeable unless you're overclocking and need more power than the PCIe connector can provide.

Hello,

i connected the PCI-e in the CPU because i saw that the CPU connector had the same amount of pins as the GPU, so i didnt really payed attention if it said PCI-e or CPU in the cable thing.

now my question is… could that cause any kind of damage, or at least reduce the CPU performance?

being honest, everything worked, and the PC have been working for over a year and nothing bad had happened until now, i just noticed the mistake when i opened the PC not long ago.

I have a CX750 PSU and a i7 6700k with a Z170 MOBO

How is that even possible that you connect a PCI-E power connector to the CPU 4/8 pin connector?

Did you force the cable onto the header????

As @Crunchy Dragon mentioned, the CPU power header, and the PCI-E 6/8 pin connectors are same number of pins, but different shape/sizes.

I really have no idea, but when i unplugged the able, i saw the PCI-e text in the hard plastic thing, and i was like "whaaaat...this shouldnt be posible??" who knows, maybe the PSU cable had a wrong printing thing
