How much ram are you using? In my win7 it says I have 8gigs from which 5+gigs are available. Currently I'm using 2.9gis. So if you read that wrong, no problems. If you read it right, you have 32bit system. Having win8.1 doesn't automaticly mean that its 64bit.

Windows 8.1 DOES NOT mean it's automatically a 64-bit operating system...same goes for Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

32-bit versions of Windows is capped at about 4GB of RAM; installing more into the system does nothing.

64-bit versions of Windows have a MUCH larger limit - depending on which one you have (i.e. Home, Pro, Ultimate) the limit may be as high as 512GB.

Looking at the Windows 8 / 8.1 comparisons, Windows 8 comes in both 32-bit or 64-bit versions for Windows 8 (Core), Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise.

All 32-bit (aka IA-32) versions have a RAM limit of 4GB.

64-bit version of Windows 8 (Core) is limited to 128GB, while the Pro and Enterprise versions have a limit of 512GB.

I thought windows 32 bit limited ram at 3GB for some strange reason.

When you right click on My Computer and go to properties, what does it say here?

It says

Installed Memory(RAM): 8.00 GB (3.99 GB avaliable)

I KNOW that having Windows 8.1 doesnt mean its automatically a 64bit OS, I have the retail version and I installed the 64 bit one

Hmm...that is odd...

I'm going to do a little digging around on the interwebs...

Did you by any chance upgrade to Windows 8 / 8.1 with an older version of Windows (Vista / 7)?

Here are a few things you can try:

  1. As @Art Vandelay said, reset / clear the CMOS and see if that helps in any way.
  2. Have you tried adjusting the timings and frequency to the advertised values for that particular RAM kit? Try that and see if it helps.
  3. Enter the "System Configuration" program and click on the "Boot" tab and click on "Advanced Options" (or msconfig > boot > advanced options). Make sure the  "Maximum Memory" check box is NOT ticked off.
  4. Make sure Memory re-mapping is turned off in the BIOS (if there is this option).
  5. This could cause this problem as well...reseat the CPU. Check for bent pins!! Bent CPU pin(s) can cause the issue you are experiencing. Seems to be quite common for both Intel and AMD CPUs...

Have you installed ALL the latest drivers available for the your MSI 760GM-P34 FX motherboard?http://www.msi.com/product/mb/760GM-P34--FX-.html#/?div=Driver&os=All

I see there is no chipset drivers under Windows 8, but there IS one for Windows 7. This may be the culprit of for your issue. Try downloading and installing the Windows 7 ones.
