Hi there

I've got an asus strix x99 gaming motherboard with a core i7 6850k and 2x8G ddr4 2400mhz memory

I've been given 8x4G Corsair dominator platinum 3400mhz

The mobo only supports up to 3333mhz so, naturally, post code 53 (memory incompatibility)

The funny thing is that if I put for exemple 1x8G of my other memory and 1x4G of the corsair one, everything goes fine, 12G detected, both with the 2400mhz speed.

If I understand well what is happening, the fastest one has been underclocked to the speed of the slowest one. Is that correct ?

So my question is : can I manually underclock the 3400mhz memory so that it can be supported (let's say 2666mhz for example) ? If yes, how ?

Thanks allready

Reset the memory speed settings in your motherboard. This will have the RAM use DDR4-2166 speeds (usually). Then you can set memory speed option to use the fastest speed that the slowest module supports.

@saksham Problem is, with only the corsair ram inserted, error postcode comes before I can enter bios :/

Maybe I m doing something wrong

do you have another computer by chance? if so, insert them into a mobo that does support them and then underclock them, put them back n the new one. I really dont see another option

I believe it's the motherboard who "asks" the underclock to the ram. I think that the ram doesnt "remember" its clock settings from one computer to the other.

Do you see what I mean ?

that just reminded me. If you put the corsair ones into the motherboard and just let it boot cycle a few times, the mobo will automatically loosen the timings to allow itself to actually boot. i remember did a #AskGn on this topic in episode 81.

let it power cycle a few times. i dont have a computer to try it with, but i am guessing it should start loosening timings after 5 cycles. again, i am not sure how many it will actually take. so yes, wait for a while.
