Motherboard mounting question

Go to solution Solved by brob,

How?

The case came with 18 motherboard/hdd mounting screws as described on page 06 of http://www.corsair.com/en/media/cms/manual/49_000178_revAA_200R_InstallGuide_EFGISRChJ.pdf. The instructions for mounting a motherboard are described on page 10 of the same document.

How do I take off the mount that Linus said you must remove to mount an ATX motherboard

Be more specific. What case? What mount? There shouldn't be anything in the way of an ATX motherboard in a new case.

Is this in reference to an additional standoff included with a case, if so what case is it?

Well I haven't taken out the motherboard from the box yet but yes I do have the case

Looking at pics and it seems that there is a little rectangle shape that has a standoff that is not present on micro-atx

what about micro atx linus said there was a standoff that could short out the motherboard

One should always check pre-installed standoffs to make sure that they are in the correct mounting locations. If you look at the diagram on page 10 of http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/atx2_1.pdf you will note that mATX has two positions R & S not used for ATX. If during assembly standoffs were put in those positions, mounting an ATX board over them might cause problems. It's also possible that an mATX board might not use both R & S, which would also cause a problem it a standoff was in each position.

Do I have to put any standoffs in this case cause there are none that are included

The picture posted by @RatedBlam shows built-in standoffs. If mounting an ATX board simply remove the one brass standoff.

Yes, if there are no stand-offs OR any missing stand-offs (i.e. they didn't install from the factory) then you need to put them on yourself.

Stand-off's play a major role(s) for the motherboard.

  • Grounds (electrically) the motherboard
  • Prevents the motherboard from short circuiting
  • Creates some space between the metal case and the back of the board

How?

You install or uninstall them by screwing them in and out....with your hands (or a tiny hex wrench)....not too difficult...

Well, you don't even have your motherboard out of the box yet, so that won't help much, does it.

One method of determining which stand-offs are needed and which are not is by simply placing the case on its side (on a table). Then hold the motherboard over the case, as if you are mounting it. Look at where the holes for the stand-off's are (motherboard), and look at where they correspond on the computer case.

PS: How did you have your current system built...if you don't know how to install motherboard stand-off's??
