The BS GPU Market

AbysmalCraig

Right this might seem a bit long winded but bear with me,

I started planning my rig over 2 years ago and eventually finished it quite recently in janurary except for one crucial component, the graphics card.

I originally spec'd a gtx 1080 as all I'm gaming on is HD - No 4k for me, but I have been waiting over 2 years for the prices of GPU's to come back to normal to no avail. Which led me to buy a second hand 1080ti - bad idea - I was told it was an ex mining card but it still functioned perfectly, 2 days into running and I've got blue smoke coming out of it playing SIMCITY.

So I ask you, the great community, what should I do now, my budget is completely shot and all I want to do is game in HD on my completed build but not wanting to pay a fortune for the graphics card. Please send help

older geforce cards like 700 series and 900 series? they mined badly so they are far less likely to be ex-mining cards.

So you need a 1080ti to play simcity?  What games are you playing and at what resolution? If you are doing 1080p, a gtx 1060 would suffice.

I agree with comment here.  Do you really need a 1080ti? A GTX 1060 6GB is equivalent  to a 980. It is a pretty good card for 1080P gaming.

A 1060 6gb would be a good card for a 1080p mid to high on AAA titles and also it is 280$ or you can try to troubleshoot you're 1080TI

I got the 1080ti purely to future proof if I ever decided to eventually go down the 4k route.

I've been looking at the 1050ti as it's more in my price range but your comment on the 1060 has swayed me I think

I you look around for deals and NVDA web site, you might find it for a decent price. Also check out if any local stores have it in inventory. Store near me had an excess inventory and they were giving 10% discount for in store GPU purchases.

1050Ti isn't worth it with the price - performance ratio. Look for a 1060 6GB or possibly a 980/980Ti.

AMD options are RX570 - R580.

hi.

You can also buy a 1070Ti if you want even higher fps in games a 1070ti is 5-10% less fps but about 15% cheaper than a 1080

What brand is it? If you are lucky enough to have an EVGA card you can send it in for RMA no questions asked. If not contact the seller for the receipt and try to send it back anyways.

When you say blue smoke... we need more information. How much smoke? If could be from many different things. You might be able to just take the card apart, give it a nice wipe with 99% alcohol, toss on new heat pads and apply some fresh TIM and put it back together. Then see if you have problems. If you aren't seeing artifacts, aren't getting blue screens or crashes, the temps are within norm, etc.... then it could be nothing but some oil or grease burning off the card.

It's a gigabyte 1080ti

Haven't thought of the rma process purely for the fact it's second hand

It was bellowing out blue smoke then no display and then fans stopped and it's sat that way ever since - I will try what you say and update shortly

I work full time but have been renovating a full house at the same time, which costs ALOT of money.

A 1070 ti is going to cost me around £470 plus delivery which is out of my price range at the moment.

My budget is £200 - £250 max

If it did that then it is probably dead. I thought you meant it was doing it WHILE still working.

I would go to the gigabyte site and request warranty status by SN. Then go forward with it. Normally you can get away with no receipt just a purchase location (which they don't do anything with) however, in my experience if you don't have a receipt the warranty is from the manufacture date and not the purchase date.

Just looking this up just now, fingers crossed

So for the EU the rma process is as follows:

For the first year - return to seller

For the second and third year -  contact the service centre for rma details , repair or replacement

Good news :)

Says the 1080ti Launched March 10,2017. So you have 2 years left on the warranty lol

Also appears they do have "transferable" warranties. I can't find more than a few posts on some review sites about it though and nothing official on their site.

the gpu replacement for that price is a new rx580 or a 1050ti or a used card

Waiting two years to maybe save 20% off the full build cost of your PC is pretty stupid no matter the circumstances.
