Does the 1-2 ms response time of a TN outweigh the colours and 5 ms response time of a TN panel if I use my computer for mostly games (league, overwatch, ect)? Do ips typically cost more?

There's a lot of pros and cons behind each.

IPS tends to look better, better viewing angles, better colors, but they're more expensive as you said. I use TN because of the cost for high refresh rate, generally a lot cheaper and I don't find myself viewing my monitors from different angles, ever. As well as I don't particularly care about how accurate my colors are :)

Much like @jeffmeyer5295 above me, I prefer TN for gaming.

I'm not doing professional level production that needs accurate color reproduction (particularly when addressing print), and I prefer response and refresh rate over it, for gaming purposes.

I use a S2716DGR as my primary driver, and I'm very happy with it.
On-panel and Nvidia color adjustment combined, I've got close-enough to color accuracy that I can do light production, and enjoy gaming with vibrant, accurate-enough colors.

Switching from 1ms to 4-5ms does produce a noticeable, but small difference. It's not something that you won't get used to though.

The response time means nothing.

Ips is a a much better technology, but it is more expensive. It is very expensive to make into high refreshrate monitor, so it is usually 60hz.

IPS has much better colors, viewing angles.

VA is an inbetween IPS and TN. It has better colors and viewing angles than TN, but not as good as IPS. It is used for better high refreshrate monitors.

TN is cheap, crappy, but it can make very high refresh monitors for cheap. Dont buy TN if doing any photo/video editing, as the colors are inaccurate and viewing angles are bad.

So IPS and VA all the way, TN only when short on cash, or when doing high refreshrate for cheap.

TN monitors are cheap, but you get higher refresh rates for cheaper. I would get IPS for any color critical work or need the viewing angles and are happy to shell the money out.

I totally agree. If you can afford it go IPS or VA. But to get that high refresh rate for not a lot of $$ I prefer TN. It is not the better technology though. I am just one of those people that will take higher fps over better colors/viewing angles. If I could afford a high refresh IPS monitor I'd jump on it. My next monitor will likely be a Samsung VA, though.

Well VA is still better than TN,  it has full viewing angles and better colors.

Lol, which is why I said TN is not the better technology and will likely being going VA next? xD

I had the GTX 980Ti with the Asus PG278Q. TN, 144HZ, 1ms, G-sync.

Then i had a 390 with the Asus MG279Q. IPS, 144HZ, 4ms, Freesync.

The perceived difference in visual quality improved going from the TN panel setup, despite coming down from a significantly more powerful graphics card. If you're wondering why i made the switch, the G-sync IPS screen was almost 50% more expensive than the G-Sync TN screen and the Freesync IPS screen.

IPS monitors are more expensive, hence the Freesync decision, not paying extortionate amounts for Nvidia proprietary software. IPS also has generally slower response times, however i think some people are overstating their case when arguing that IPS have higher response time. Higher does not necessarily mean high.
