Make a VM into a server ?

I have seen a bunch of articles about 'turning your old pc into a NAS'

I was wondering is it possible to create a VM and run software such as 'EaseUS Todo Backup Free' and treat this VM as a server,
would I be able to access this remotely using something like windows RDS and run backups and recovery of data,
Is this a possibility, it doesn't need to necessarily work full time, even if it just works once that's fine its more of a thing I wanna document and work on,

Why? A server is it to have something running 24/7 and not hog your main pc resources.

This is just an experiment, its not something I will be implementing at all,
I will just be wanting to see if I can backup and recover data this way
I just want to know if it would be possible before I start messing around with it

I still don't understand what you are trying to do, are you trying to backup stuff on computer you are running the vm or another computer?

As long as the software that you're trying to used will run in a virtualised environment, then yes you can do this. You just need to make sure the VM network adapter is configured to talk externally rather than internally so that you can connect to it remotely as a regular computer without having to manually proxy through the host.

it means its running on a hypervisor (virtualised hardware) as opposed to bare metal where your OS is installed onto hardware (like your home PC, or a laptop, or a tablet, etc...). A hypervisor is its own operating system that provides an abstraction layer where you emulate the CPU, Memory, HDD, etc....

It depend what the mean with "old". In my Case my old Pc is about 10 Years old and takes a lot of power. So its not a good idea by turning them into a nas.

No this will not be possible. If your VM host goes down your backup will also go down. It can't be classified as backup just a replica. However you can use a VM to access files remotely if you don't want to open your whole desktop and just make the files you want to share available on it.

You could do that, but you don't gain a bunch by backing up to the same computer.

 

You could run the backup and transfer the resultant archive in Google drive or something, although you'd have to be conscious of file size.

sry for the late replay. My Emotion drive me crazy. I am depressed, tiered and very pissed. The dont have anything to do with anyone here.

Hmm currently I have 2 Backups from my Data:
a) an "hot" Backup on an cheap USB Dongle where I safe daily my Mails on.

b) an RDX Quickstore "HDD" who I remove after the Backup so the are 100% offline.

And if the "Server Room" get burned, flooded,... yey I dont care.
