Same PPI = Same Quality?

boey

Hello, I currently own a 23.5” 1080p monitor, but I am looking to buy a 31.5” 1440p monitor. Both monitors come out to about 93.5ppi(1440p monitor is 0.5ppi lower than 1080p). If there is similar ppi, does it mean that the image quality is similar?

Should be about the same but there can be other things that might change the image quality like the difference between TN and IPS

Mostly yes. But as ZeouLs said there are other things which can effect the image quality. What kind of panel is it (f.e.: OLED, LCD, IPS, TN, VA) what is the refresh rate of the panel (f.e.: 60Hz, 75Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, 180Hz, 240Hz) etc.

PC: i7 6700K@4GHz, EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW, HyperX Savage 16GB@2400MHz (2×8), ASUS B150-PLUS, BQ! Pure Rock cpu cooler, 4x blue LED fan (3x Sharkoon, 1x Corsair), WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM, Sharkoon DG7000 case

GearSamsung U28E570D 4K@60Hz, LG LED 22M35 1080p@60Hz, HAMA uRage Cyberboard keyboard, HAMA uRage Reaper NX mouse, HyperX Cloud II 7.1, Logitech Z623 2.1 @200W RMS, Sades Gaming mousepad, Vertagear SL2000 racing chair (black/white)

My current monitor is an Acer G237HL

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/model/UM.VG7SA.A02

1920 x 1080

IPS Panel

60Hz

23.5”

4ms response(i think, i could be wrong)

The monitor I’m looking at is a PRISM+ X315 PRO(local small company here in singapore)

https://prismplus.sg/products/prism-x315-pro

2560 x 1440

144Hz

VA Panel

31.5”, 1800R curve

6ms GTG response time

Do you think there will be a big difference in experience(image quality, etc), besides the jump from 60Hz to 144hz?

Not just a big but a HUGE difference in a good way...

That PRISM+ (or whatever I can call it) is way much better than your current monitor.

As I'm calculating it your acer monitor has got 93.74 PixelPerInch (PPI) and the PRISM+ has got 93.24 PixelPerInch (PPI) so they are the same. The image quality will be around the same, maybe the acer is a little bit better cus the IPS panel but you aren't gonna notice that because holy moly... 144Hz 1440p experience will compense everything and on this big 31.5" screen. That's huge trust me. Have you got the hardware to fill all that 144fps? Last year I switched my 21.5" 1080p cheap LG monitor equiped with a 60Hz TN panel to a 4K 60Hz 28" SAMSUNG giant (again in TN cus the 1ms response time) and it was a huge upgrade. Trust me you won't care about the PPI at all. Go for that monitor looks sweat. Oh and if you should worry about something those are the dead pixels or pixel faliures. These mostly unknown not worldwide selling cheap companies usually haven't got faliure warranty. I've got one little green dot in the middle of my SAMSUNG 4K 28" monitor. If you've got more than 7 of 'em you should have warranty.

Anyway if you wanna calculate the PPI here you are: https://www.sven.de/dpi/

In terms of JUST PPI and size. yea they will be the same..but

With a higher resolution display the games will render at a higher resolution.

If you take a 1080p display, and load a game at 1080, then load that same game at 1440p and again at 4k . (again i mention this is all on a 1080p display)

you will notice a difference in quality. The 4k image will look better than the 1080p image, even on a 1080p display.

So.

Your 1080p monitor vs 1440p monitor . The 1440p will look better becouse the games will be running at native 1440p, not 1080p. To see the true difference, if any, you would have to run the games u compare both at 1080p.

However as others have mentioned theres a whole lot of other things to consider. Panel type for one, and then the quality of that panel.

I think it can be exchanged under warranty if it has more than 5 dead pixels

That's entirely subjective. I'd take 4K 60hz over 144hz 1080p/1440p any day of the week. 1080p @ 24" / 1440p @ 27" looks horrible -- if I was willing to pay for a better GPU and/or used my desktop for things other than occasional gaming, then I would have dropped my 1080p monitor long ago.

Oh, and FYI, response time is pretty much meaningless. There is no standardized way of measuring it, so you can't compare the response times on different monitors short of using the same test source. Secondly, even if one is measured as 1ms and the other is measured at 5ms using the same methodology, you will NEVER notice a difference between the two.

Do you think USD$440 is worth it for the 1440p monitor?

I can't say I've paid much attention to monitor pricing, so I don't know how that compares with other similar monitors. But, refresh rate vs color vs resolution is entirely up to personal preference.

I'd take color and resolution over refresh rate anyday (and yes, I've owned a 144hz monitor), but not everyone has the same preference.
