LG G6 vs Zenfone 5 (ZE620KL)

Hey, which one of those 2 would you choose? Both are basically for the same price 400$ (+-). Thank you for answers :)

The G6 is still a flagship phone so it wins by a little in terms of performance but phone cpu performance doesn't matter anymore imo. The G6's screen is higher res and I think the camera is a bit better as well. The Zenfone 5's screen is bigger but with the lower res, the screen is less sharp than the G6's. Personally on specs alone I'd go for the G6 but the Zenfone 5 looks better imo.

At this point it's more about preference than raw performance

Personally I'd go with the Zenfone 5. Asus is great when it comes to updates, and their phones are pretty solid.

It's kind of hard to say without any more information though; what's important to you in a phone?

Unless you really require flagship SoC performance, I'd probably go with the Zenfone. Battery life is likely to be much better.

The SD821 stomps the 636 in pure performance quite heavily (at least initially), though you pay pretty dearly in battery life and heat. The gap lessens quite a lot once throttling hits though, which it will hit the 821 much harder than the 636.

If you want to know relative performance...

However the Zenfone is going to last longer on its battery and match or even beat the G6 in games because...

Its screen is 1080p versus the G6's 1440p

Other differences include:

  • Zenfone has a 6GB RAM version. G6 is limited to 4GB worldwide
  • G6 has IP68 rating
  • Zenfone doesn't have a glass back that is prone to fingerprint/shattering
  • Zenfone has more advanced cameras
  • Zenfone doesn't support AptX-HD if you are into high end BT audio
  • US version of the G6 has wireless charging

The Adreno 530 is still quite formidable. Even at 1440P vs 1080P, I don't think the resolution difference will make up the substantial difference in gpu performance, at least, if the 530 is running at full speed. Throttling though, then the G6 will almost certainly lose out.

But Android games tho...

If you didn't realize that Android game development puts accessibility before everything else. Microtransactions don't sell if the game runs like arse, or doesn't run at all.

Not that OP mentioned games in the first place. I have several SD625 phones and games all seem smooth and fine.

Yeah, agreed there. With but few exceptions (potentially with Life Is Strange very soon), most Android games won't be pushing the gpu very hard, and tbh, those that dare do so will probably incur throttling from the device soon enough anyway.

When running a certain graphics demo on my Dad's Honor 6X (comparable SoC to the SD625), the most striking thing was how cool the phone ran for what is acceptable performance, even for over an hour straight under load. My own phone with the SD821 ran it at more than twice the framerate (hitting v-Sync), but it gets quite hot in a hurry. Even with the powerful GPUs in modern flagship devices, it hardly seems practical to actually use fully them outside winter.
