Making an SLI Setup

i currently have a 1080 founders edition and am going to water cool it. I also want to get a second. I know when u water cool u take the cooling shroud off, but my worry is that if i get one of the cheaper asus 1080s instead of another founders edition from nvidia they might not work in sli. My overall question is do i have to get a founders edition or can a get a Asus, Msi, EVGA etc.

You have to have the exact same graphics card for sli, nvidia is very strict about there sli rules. So therefore you must have another gtx 1080 founders editon. I hope I helped.

My current code projects

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P ) 
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D


Current repair projects

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew ) 
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back 
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

SLI just needs two of the same GPUs, AIB partners like MSI, Asus, and so on only change the PCB design and other bits like power delivery but they are all a 1080. It will just run at the speed of the lowest clocked card

DifferentSLIAuto is a small, free tool that allows you to pair together different GPUs of similar generation/architecture to work together in SLI

My current code projects

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P ) 
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D


Current repair projects

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew ) 
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back 
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

you said you wanted to use an asus card with a gtx 1080 founders editon

 

if its an asus card specifically a gtx 1080 then yeah you could do sli with that founders editon if it's anything other than that, you need to get that program ( does not mean i recommend it ).

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P ) 
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D


Current repair projects

------------------------------

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew ) 
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back 
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

sli is unsupported for a lot of games and from my experience badly optimized. I don't like sli. Specifically on the nvidia side of things. I meant that you couldn't use a card from a different manufacturer i was saying if it was a gtx 1060 or 1070 or even something so close to a 1080, a 1070 ti you can never use it to pair with a gtx 1080 i thought he was talking about just "some asus card"

This is very definitely not true... 

 

As long as the processing core is the same (the actual GPU) then SLI works. The card doesn't matter. The memory amount must also be the same

Just keep in mind that ideally you will want a HB (High Bandwith) SLI Bridge and those are rigid so if you pair your founders card with other brand that has different width then you will not be able to bridge them. You will have to use two ribbon Bridges which, while not bad, is not ideal either.

  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back 
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

OP - you do not need an exact match, just the same gpu model (ie 1080 Ti).

 

The only caveat is what @Lathlaermentioned, some AIB partner cards use custom PCBs so they are physically wider than the founders edition, in which case you would not be able to connect their SLI fingers with the High Bandwidth bridges that Nvidia recommends for 10 series cards. You would need to use 2 SLI ribbon connectors which would result in a slight performance loss compared to an HB bridge.

Once you get your SLI setup you can try Nvidia Profile Inspector to try to get games to utilize that setup better than they would natively.
