Microphone problems

I just recently got my new PC and I went on skype to talk to my friends and only just realising that my microphone wasn't working. I pulled it out and plugged it into my phone and it worked then but for some reason it doesn't work on my computer. Do I need a sound card to be able to use a microphone. BTW its an apple microphone so like the earphones with the mic attached.

This is what comes up when I plug the earphones in -

If it's the earbuds with a mic in the line and just had one connector try plugging them into the headphone jack if you have them plugged into your mic jack

If this doesn't work, try it on a laptop or another PC if you have one.  It maybe your audio drivers.  But try ^ first, should fix the problem

The apple earphone uses a 4 connections socket and plug,  you can't use that in the PC as it is, you'll need an adapter.

As Sors said, headphones with in line mics use TRRS (tip ring ring sleve) connectors versus the normal TRS (tip ring sleve) connector. Because your computer doesn't have TRRS connections, you'll need an adapter.
