Posted July 12, 2018 I have a gaming desktop which I will buy the ASUS PG27UQ for in a few months. I also have a Macbook pro for work with thunderbolt 3 ports and wondered if it could power the 4k 144hz monitor at full resolution. Could it drive it? Posted July 12, 2018 I'm not 100% sure but I believe Thunderbolt 3 can handle 4K 144Hz. Posted July 13, 2018 I'm not completely up to speed about DisplayPort and ThunderBolt 3 but I think you'd still need 2 cables regardless if the TB3 port can handle all the data with one cable, because the receiving DP port on the monitor won't be able to keep up with one cable? I might be wrong.
Posted July 13, 2018 No. The PG27UQ doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, it only has DisplayPort and HDMI, so you can't take advantage of the Thunderbolt 3 display capabilities, it will have to transmit in DisplayPort mode. Since MacBook Pros only have Thunderbolt 3 controllers with DisplayPort 1.2 support, you'll be limited to 4K 75 Hz at the most (possibly 60 Hz depending on the devices) Forum Rules | Guide to Display Cables / Adapters
