So I recently picked up a new map update disk for my 2009 Lexus IS350 and was wondering how Lexus had managed to get their maps to fit on a single sided DVD-RW as I knew that most maps were in the 5GB+ rage.

Due to my curisoity, the disc went straight to my PC rather than my car and upon insertion it came up with this:

This really confused me as I could not comprehend how a disk of this size existed because as far as I am aware, a single layered DVD disc is can only hold upto 4.7gb due to the amount of free sectors avaliable. I've not checked the total capacity of the drive but I'm assuming it to be 6GB on a SINGLE Layered disc

A Google search comes up with no existance of a disc with a higher capacity of 4.7GB and I was wondering how this exists.

It's probably double layered, you can't tell just by looking at it as far as I'm aware and as @Enderman said it doesn't mean it's double sided.

As for how they "fit" the maps on it I would assume they used some pretty efficient compression.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Way back when I still had XP there was a Nero users guide on how to burn a movie or any stuff that was bigger than 4.7gb via compression so this might be it

BUT afaik DL DVDs have this marking on them

or a label like DVD-R DL or something along those lines

No, thats still single layer marking. This would be same for dual layer:

But if you google this, it shows that markings may vary and since its DVD-ROM, they don't need to mark it as you won't be able to overwrite it anyway.
