So, what is your best guess for when GPU pricing will drop?

GilmourD

Long story short I've got a GTX 560Ti and... It's old. It does weird things when I log out of Windows and nVidia's not supporting it with driver updates any longer. I don't want anything crazy since, when I do game, it's basically stuff like TF2 and CS:GO, so I'm eyeballing the GTX 1060 3GB (yeah, I know, it's not the 6GB... Get over it, the 3GB is cheaper).

With all the stories about how GPU pricing is supposed to drop 20% this month... I'm surprised it hasn't happened, yet.

So, when do you think this will happen? How likely do you think it'll be that I can get a 1060 3GB for $175 (which the wife is OK with me spending)?

The 6GB 1060 isn't worth it over the 3GB model if the price difference is over $70-80. If it's less than that, go for it. Which 1060 3GB are you looking at?

Its already dropping. Dont buy the 3 GB 1060, get a used 1060 6 GB card. Its a LOT better and will certainly last you longer. Pay a little bit more now for saving in the long run.

Tell that to my wife. LOL I'm already in trouble for buying too much guitar stuff over the past year.

Also... I have have that sort of luck where every time I buy used electronics I have a problem that would've been warrantied if I purchased new.

Supposedly Nvidia has metric tons of stock still that they will likely flash sale right before the 11 series comes out. Prices are good now, however, so if you don't want to wait, there are currently great deals on low to mid-range cards. Check PC Parts Picker and organize by price to get an idea about what is decent right now brand new

One thing to know is that the 1060 3gb actually has some disabled SM and halved vram compared to the 6gb. Performance wise, it's actually some amount less capable than the 1060 6gb. If you are just gaming at 1080p 60hz it should definitely last a few more years, however in 2-3 years after the next gen of consoles come out, you might find yourself wishing you got the 6gb due to increasing performance requirements.

If I were you I'd get a used 1060 6gb on Ebay. While most of the cards there are recycled mining cards, Gamers Nexus did a big analysis on Bits Be Trippins mining cards and found that there were no negative impacts on the longevity of the gpus when used for mining.

I honestly haven't looked at a specific model but I've always bought EVGA in the past (6600GT, 7900GS, GTX 560Ti). Those look like $230 right now.

Here are some good options I found,

EVGA 1060 3gb

EVGA 1060 6gb

Personally owned this exact card. Gets a little loud if you OC it much, but otherwise great. Only a $40 price difference between the two after rebate, but the value of $40 is different from one person to the next so no judgments here. Good luck!

ELI5 why the 3GB card isn't good enough for a guy that plays TF2 and CS:GO in his spare time (currently at 1080p, maybe at 1440p in the future). Won't I get at least 60 frames even at 1440p? Couldn't care less about Crysis. xD

My GTX 560Ti is still giving me decent frames at 1080p in the games I have interest in so... Still not seeing your logic.

It's just starting to act weird after seven years and no longer has driver support (which I think may be connected).

I *think* what O9B0 was trying to say was that games at 1080p are already maxing out the 3gb vram buffer and exceeding it. For example, this benchmark here done by the Youtube user Wolfgang shows that PUBG already exceeds 3.7gb of vram.

PUBG is well renown for being horribly unoptimized but a 30% to 40% decrease in 1% lows on the 3gb version for a game that came out almost a year ago isnt a great sign of whats to come for the future of gaming with the 3gb card.

If you really cant swing the extra $$ then maybe wait until the 11 series comes out to future-proof your rig. The 1080 came out in May of 2016 and the 1060 6gb and 3gb came out 2 and 3 months after that, so logic dictates that we should probably see some newer gpus in the price range youre looking for coming by November at the latest. Again, you can recoup a significant amount of your investment by purchasing a used GPU and selling it for a near financial net-zero when the new cards come out, but I completely understand the want for a warranty. A lot of 1060s on ebay are still under said warranty, however, so check with the sellers.

dont upgrade to junk that is on the low end of cards that can play stuff now. If you have 3gb of vram now you should consider upgrading to something better, so why would you buy something that sucks now when in a couple years wont be doing much? spending a little bit more for the 6gb version and you will be happier longer.

Like my card for example...it would not be smart to upgrade to something that is already 2 years old and at the bottom of the barrel in that generation.

By the logic in the second sentence, I'm tripling my VRAM. :)

at this day and age having a 3gb card you ready for a upgrade is what im saying. Hell even my card needs a upgrade, but i damn sure wont get something a tad better when i upgrade. and to be totally fair, if you were asking if you should upgrade to the card i have, i would say hell no even that gtx 10603gb is slightly better as im always maxing out my core clock of 1256 and the gtx is around 1500 something? so im not bashing that card alone, my cards a pile of shit i wouldnt reccomend, and would reccommend the 3gb card over mine, so im not acting like mines any better or im better then whoever, i just hate to see you get something like my card which i can play gta v fortnite farcry 5 wolfenstien the new one warframe all with max settings in 1080 p with 55-80 fps. But in another year or 2, these numbers will get lower and lower...with a gtx1060gb your cores faster, more vram and will out live my card. So to make this clear someone having a gtx whatever you have, wanted to upgrade, says im going to get a rx470, i would say no dont do it, as a person owning this card this cards in need of a upgrade itself, why upgrade from a card, to this one which is outdated, atleast get something 6gb or more in vram with faster core, my rx470 is maxed out in most all games i play. i dont get why you make this so hard its just 50 bucks more, if you dont have it just wait...i have enough i could get a 1070 now and was tempted to yesterday but i said to myself ill just wait a bit longer for new stuff when ill have the money for better. My wifes computer, she barely games, shes not getting this  rx470 i have shes getting a 1060 6gb when i get a new gpu cuz that thing is simply junk, and will be our backup gpu, as thats all that is worth.
