Gaming/Streaming/Productivity Build

It's like Grey/Black

Gaming 7 X470 is the one with the overkill VRM heatsink.

Either of the motherboards will be fine, same with the Crosshair VII

1. Budget & Location

My budget is around $1800 USD, not looking to go much higher than that.

2. Aim

This build is going to be mainly used for triple A gaming and streaming, but I also will need to do some 3D modeling and photo/video editing as well.

3. Monitors

Right now, the only monitor I have and am planning to use is the Omen by HP 25in Display (FHD (1920 x 1080 @144hz)

4. Peripherals

I have all of the peripherals that I need (Mouse, keyboard, monitor, headset). I will need Windows 10, I was planning on getting a key from SCDKey (BTW, is this a reliable site or should I go somewhere else?)

The main goal of this post is to find out whether I should use the Ryzen 7 2700x or the Intel i7-8700k. I am planning on overclocking whichever one I get, but I don't know whether the extra cores on the Ryzen would make up for the worse clock rate/lost FPS.

CPU: Intel i7-8700k OR Ryzen 7 2700x

Motherboard: Gigabyte z370 Aorus Gaming 7 OR Gigabyte x470 Aorus Gaming 7

Cooler: NZXT - Kraken x62 Rev 2

RAM: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

Storage: Samsung - 860 EVO 500GB 2.5" SSD

GPU: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card

PSU: SeaSonic  - Focus Plus Gold 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

ALSO: Do I need a different graphics card if I am running the Ryzen setup or can I stick with the 1080?

Stormtrooper PC

Cooling - Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4

SCDKey's keys are overpriced. Go elsewhere. eBay is not the most reputable place, but at least the keys work and PayPal is willing to back you the fuck up if shit hits the fan.

What kind of programs do you use for photo/video editing? If you use Adobe, 100% go 8700k.

idk

Id run the 2700x setup for youe usecase. The extra threads will come in handy.

You can run the 1080. It will ve the best choice of GPU unoess you can get a Vega 64 for around the same price. Does your Omen come equiped with Freesync?

What's the exact model of your display? It might have free-sync.

*If it has free-sync grab Vega 56, it's back down to near MSRP anyways

Probably just grab the R7 1700 over the 2700X given that it's near $200 right now

Might consider this with a Vega 64. Can fit a 1080ti in the budget.

Grab the case you want and a key from reddit for 25$

You can use a 1080 just fine.

Freesync matches the refreshrate with frames in games removing tearing making it a smoother experience.

You dont loose anything by picking a Vega 64 in terms of performance. It cost the same as a mid-tier 1080.

So it costs about the same and it prevents tearing?

I'll say this.  99% of the, "mainly gaming occasional creative" builds should be built for pure gaming.  Anything short of professional video work will be executed flawlessly by a gaming build.  99% of you are wasting you money on an 8700k/2700x when an 8600k/8400/8350k/2600/2400g would be plenty.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

Pretty much. Though you do loose a few frames in games which use Nvidia specific features. Though these can be turned of without loss in visuals. Though by using up to date drivers you wont notice anything

A few frames in not too big of a deal compared to losing half your frames in the few Radeon specific games. (cough cough Deus Ex)

This is actually whole lot less of a difference than i thought.

To add though, with the recent Adobe premiere update that allowed iGPU acceleration on intel cpus there's little reason to choose ryzen anymore.

Radeon Only because nvidia hates freedom.

You don't need to buy windows you can install it for free without a key.

Premiere just added quick sync support which makes the 8700K the best CPU for it basically.

Or just use Vegas and avoid paying a monthly sub fee anyways, then go for Ryzen if Vegas.

I thought these performance issues were fixed after a driver update from Nvidia.

Usually the AMD version of Nvidia features impact performance less as soon as Nvidia gets a driver out for them.
