Replacement for Oneplus X

BeastlyXiem

After some years of good service, I feel it's time to retire my Oneplus X. Some things that I liked on the OPX include its oled screen, build quality, size, notification slider and headphone jack. I've been let down by its lack of software updates (still running android 6!) and audio jack sound quality.

Size is one of the most important ones for me. I'm not necessarily looking for something at or below 5 inches, in terms of screen size, but I'd like the total size of the phone to be not much bigger than the OPX. Speaking of the screen, after I got the Galaxy S3 some years ago, I never went back to LCD screens. I love the colours and as someone who is up at night quite a bit, the perfect blacks make all the difference. A GOOD lcd would be fine too, I guess. I'm hoping there has been some progress after some years of development. The headphone jack is hard for me to decide on. I like the convenience of just plugging in my iems, but a dongle wouldn't be the end of the world. I use my phone mostly for listening to spotify on the go and i've only used my headphones that I have at home with the phone a handfull of times. The dongle would probably permanently live on the plug of my iems. What I do kinda care about is sound quality which is one of the weaker aspects of the OPX. I don't expect the same sound from a phone as I do from my home setup, but I appreciate efforts that help to improve the sound. For me the OPX completely lacks seperation of instruments and the low mids are very muddy. This gets worse at higher volumes. For this reason alone I almost replaced it with an LG v20 but the size put me off.

So far I've looked the Sony XZ2 Compact which is a great size but is lacking in the screen department (right?). I've also read and seen that the camera is not the greatest but this wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me. The OP6 might be the obvious answer but I'm not too sure about the size increase. I've used phonearena.com to compare sizes and have seen and help the OP5X in person a couple of times. I like the P20 Pro but it's a little too expensive for me. Any alternatives?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and advices.

Thanks!

If you're looking for a phone that's that size, you're going to have very limited choices. If you're fine with a larger phone, your choices open up a lot more. The P20 Pro isn't anywhere near the size of the OnePlus X, so are you open to larger options?

These are some options you might want to take a look at:

  • Google Pixel and Pixel 2
  • Nokia Scirocco 8 (if you can find a good deal)
  • Nokia 7
  • Essential PH1

Though, honestly I'd probably wait for the:

  • Nokia 9
  • Google Pixel 3

To say something is too expensive, and then not give a budget that you're comfortable with kind of makes it hard to give suggestions ;)

Hi and thanks for the input!

I wrongly assumed that there are 2 verions of the P20: Pro and Lite. Turns out there is a third, just the P20. This version is only 9mm taller than the OPX, which I think is acceptable. The P20 Pro is 15 mm taller. I'm trying to see a couple of phones in person tomorrow to get a better feel for sizes. By no means do I have small hands, quite the opposite, but I like to comfortable hold and control my phone with one hand.

I didn't include a budget because I assumed that prices would vary quite a bit from country to country. Where I live, the XZ2 Compact goes for ~530 Euro and the OP6 starts at 519 Euro. Let's say my budget is around 550. The P20 pro goes for ~750 Euro.

I won't be doing any gaming, maybe some occasional sudoku, but I like my phone to feel fast with everything I do. Mostly internet/reddit browsing, messaging, navigating and Spotify listening. Why not go for a phone around 300 Euro? Well, I might, if I can find one that feels refined and durable. Feel is important for me (and highly subjective).

Although the minor complaints are stacking up, my OPX is still working so I'm not in too much of a hurry.

Edit 1: replaced bigger with taller
