It used to power things like HHDs. These days it's more or less used as a power tap point.

Molex is actually the name of a business. A lot of people refer to a "Molex connector" in computing as the pin and socket connection used on older peripheral 5.25" form factor computer hardware.

There's no place like ~

It's ironic, since the 1st computer peripheral in a computer which used whats ubiquitously now known as the "Molex connector" was released in 1976, that connector was the "AMP MATE-N-LOK 1-480424-0". Molex only released a compatible connector for the AMP MATE-N-LOK 1-480424-0 in 1983, called the Molex 8981.

Anyway, that connector is used for peripheral devices, such as 5.25" floppy drives, 5.25" and 3.5" PATA and other older standards for HDDs, older graphics cards and other ISA/PCI/PCIe cards that need more power.

It isn't much used anymore.

However, you can stick all sorts of adapters - such as SATA extensions - onto a molex. They're kinda versatile like that.

Ryzen 1600x @4GHz

Asus GTX 1070 8GB @1900MHz

16 GB HyperX DDR4 @3000MHz

Asus Prime X370 Pro

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

Noctua NH-U14S

Seasonic M12II 620W

+ four different mechanical drives.
