Currently (for last 6+ years) using Win10 Pro, Intel I7-2700k @3.4 processor, 16gb ram, Nvidia Georforce GTX 570, Smasung 840pro SSD, (2) 3TB WD HDD - primarily for Video editing in Sony Vegas, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, sometimes multitask between the programs as well as with Internet. Not a gamer.  My question is around what is the best CPU for the buck that will significantly speed up encoding, renders, 3d work in Photoshop, loading programs, etc.

I do plan to upgrade the entire system, but I believe that for editing it comes down to the CPU - just don't know if processing speed trumps cores or vise versa.  I would like some intel recommendations.

For what you're doing AMD would probably be the better choice. The 2700x along with an X470 motherboard and 16gb ddr4 ram 3200mhz is a pretty good combination. As for Intel your best bet would be the i7-8700k along with a Z370 motherboard B360 or H370 motherboard (Z370 if you want to overclock) along with 16gb of ddr4 2400mhz or higher.

If you aren't using Premiere, and you are dead set on using a PC, then yeah, you definitely want to go with Ryzen.

As for your GPU. As for your GPU, really whatever you can afford will be good enough.

Thanks for all of the help! Budget is $2500 -$3000 for entire system.  I am in the Minneapolis area and there is a Microcenter I shop at but can also do online.  Have never considered AMD - My main concern is to edit with Vegas Pro and make it much quicker.  I had read Processin speed trumps cores but don’t know in the case of Vegas.

Ryzen will be faster in Vegas, Intel in Adobe programs.
