2700x or 8700K for Virtualization?

My machine is not a bad machine, but it is not up to the task for how many VMs I want to be running at one time.

HEDT is not in my budget. This new machine's purpose is to be used as gaming/home lab.

With more and more cores coming to the consumer end, I'm thinking that either the 2700x or 8700k will be a good cpu.

The current plan would be to run these CPUs with 32 GBs DDR4-3000. No more than 4 VMs at one time.

 

Does anyone have any experience with either CPU running VMware Workstation 14 or other virtualization software? Is there any reasons why I should look at one manufacture than the other? Should I wait to see if Intel does release an 8 core- 16 thread CPU later this year?

Theoretically, Intel will release an 8-Core Coffee Lake or Cannon Lake CPU as an 8th Generation i9 in Q3, hence why there is no 2800/2800X, which is rumored to be reworked to be a 10-Core to dominate the workstation scene.

 

The 2700X is the better choice of the two, with more cores and threads, as for if you should wait, it depends on how urgently you need it.

Threadripper 1950x is @ $600 with a motherboard bundle, nows the time! More cores than you'll know to do with

I built a machine for the same type of purpose earlier this year. Went with the 7820k. I was looking at the 8700k but wanted the extra cores for virtualisation. At the time, I did look at the 1800x, but the 7820k performed better from what I read. I did look into threadripper, but the x299 chipset was more appealing.

Very happy with the performance I am getting out of it.

Cores are king here. The more the better.

 

Occasionally you'll come into compatibility problems with AMD-V although most of that has been resolved now. It's not better or worse than Intel's it's just that AMD didn't see a lot of server use for a long time so people didn't do a lot of testing. Thats changed tho with Ryzen. Anything newer than a year should work no problem.

There is a downside to this and that is my wallet takes a beating being this close to the store
