Which Drive should I buy?

Hello everyone !

I have hard time choosing which drive to go with for my first PC that I will build next week, they both well competing with each other...

So I created a short form that I will be happy if you fill.

The company and model of the drives will remain anonymous until you submit the form because I don't people to answer without thinking because they know & love one of a the companies.

After you fill it you should also be able to see other people answers.

What models of drive? There is much more than those ratings and things like controller type, nand type and brand make a big difference here.

Both are famous companies, one is more famous than the other because it has wide range of products.

I don't want to tell the name because fans of either company will simply answer based on the company that they like more.

but the exact model number makes a huge different. You can't just compare those specs like that. What controller model is in it? What type of nand? endurance ratings vary between brand and some are very overrated.

 

 

What are you using the drive for?

 

If this is just a desktop drive, get the cheaper one.

same prices (to be exact, Drive 2 is 2$ cheaper LOL).

Drive 1 3d nand.

Drive 2 v nand.

For most desktops, get a sata drive, if you want the slightly faster drive get the cheaper of the 2. Currently the 970 evo is cheaper on amazon, and a bit faster, and normally samgsung does the internals a bit better with it all made by one company, and very good endurance.

I want it for new desktop, Gaming, and sometimes editing, windows boot time.

I don't want sata because it's 5 times slower...

sata isn't 5 times slow, in desktop tasks(your not getting that 3.2gB/s in a desktop workload) its only about 50% faster(4k qd1 iops).

 

You won't notice a sata ssd speed difference in those uses, and they often boot faster as there is no pcie init. Id just get a mx500 or other sata drive here.

Why isn't it 5 times faster?

it have 3400 max speed while 860 evo only have around 530.

thats peak sequentical speed. You aren't moving files around like that. You also need a queue depth of 32 to get speeds like that and you won't reach that queue depth in almost any workload. Those numbers are basically just advertising, not real world speeds.

 

There is much more to a drive than peak speeds, look at iops under different workloads.

queue depth is how many operations a drive has at once(on average)

 

kb is the access size here, how big the request from the drive is.

 

Basically nvme nand drives don't make a big difference in dekstop uses.

I'm thinking about going with AMD Store MI, 250gb NVMe and 500gb/1TB SATA...

What do you think about this setup?

is it worth to take the extra risk of 2 drive instead of 1 (for failure)?

I wouldn't bother with storemi here, just sata ssd and your fine. 

 

If you want 2 drives, id just use them as seprate drives, storemi isn't perfect.

id go mx500, there basically the same in terms of performance, and the mx500 is cheaper.

I bought it and build my PC few weeks ago, I bought MX500 1tb for $200.

Thank you very much, you saved me $200 plus it is almost 2x faster than my previous SSD in my 7 years old laptop.

windows booting in around 10 sec.
